This invention relates to improvements in hand shields, and more particularly to a novel hand shield adapted for use by foundry workers.

An object of the invention is to protect the top and back of the hands of the user when engaged in foundry activities such as the use of a ladle having a handle subject to high temperature.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type which is economical and simple of manufacture and relatively inexpensive.

Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 refers to the device generally which may be made of leather or asbestos, together with felt or other materials appropriate for protection against heat. In one form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 a substantially circular sheet of asbestos is formed with an inlet opening from the edge thereof as at 12. The asbestos sheet element I l is backed by a layer of felt 13. As shown in Fig. 3, the lower side of the device has a thumb tab [4 formed of asbestos sheeting which has a similar felt lining 15. A finger tab i6 is provided which also has an inner liner or backing of felt IT. This form of the invention is useful where it is desired to insert only one or two fingers Within the finger tab it. A continuous binder element 58 entirely encircles the edges of the parts of the device ill and is secured to the layers of felt and asbestos by the stitching l9. To further reinforce the device 10, arcuate series of stitches are spaced throughout the shield to further reinforce the layers of asbestos H and felt H3 in the shield proper, and the layers of asbestos l4 and I6 and the related layers of felt l5 and ll in the tab portions. These arcuate rows of stitches are indicated at 2|.

In Fig. 5 a modified form of the invention is shown in which the shield 30 has an inlet opening from an edge thereof which is disposed on a bias as at 31. The shield 30 is large enough so that the finger tab 32 will admit conveniently a plurality of fingers in use. The top portion 33 of the shield 30 is formed of a sheet of asbestos material backed with a layer of felt 34, not shown. A thumb tab 34 is provided on the under side of the shield and is similarly formed of asbestos sheet material with a layer of felt disposed interiorly thereof, as is the finger tab 32.

In Fig. 6, a modified form of shield 40 is shown in which the hand shield portion 4| has an integral arm shield 42 which may extend up to the elbow of the user. The edges of the modification shown in Fig. 5 are secured by a binder 35 held in place by stitching 36. The modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 has thumb and finger tabs similar to the other forms of the invention, and has its edges secured by the continuous binder 43 and the stitching 44.

It will be understood that the device is capable of many modifications in structure and design, without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

1. A hand shield comprising a substantially circular body portion of asbestos adapted to cover the back of the hand having a rounded inlet opening from an edge thereof, a tab of the same material on either side of said inlet opening subjoined to said body portion to form stalls to accommodate the thumb and forefinger, a felt backing for the under side of the body portion, and similar felt backings on the upper sides of said tabs, and an integral arm shield extension on said body portion opposite said inlet opening.

2. A hand shield comprising a substantially circular body portion of asbestos adapted to cover the back of the hand having a rounded inlet opening from an edge thereof, a tab of the same material on either side of said inlet opening subjoined to said body portion to form stalls, to accommodate the thumb and fingers, a selfbacking for the under side of the body portion, and similar self-backings on the upper side of said tabs, and an integral arm shield extension on said body portion opposite said inlet open- JOHN L.
