HAMMER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JETHRO HosKYN, of Crescent Heights post-oilice, in the city of Calgary, in the Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to devise a hammer which will serve not only for driving nails and the ordinary uses of a hammer, but which will also satisfactorily take the place of the mallet used for striking chisel handles.
I attain my object by attaching to the side of the hammer head a piece of leather which is secured to the wood of the handle below the eye of the hammer and is held in place at its upper edge by means of a clip secured to the wood of the handle with in the said eye, substantially as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a hammer provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 0c-y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the head of the hammer with the attachment in place.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the difierent figures.
A is the head of the hammer in the eye of which the handle B is inserted in the usual manner.
C is a piece of stout leather shaped to fit the side of the hammer head and secured to the wooden part of the handle by means of the screw and washer D. The upper edge Specification of Letters Patent.

of the leather is held in place by means of a clip E. This clip is provided with a serrated edge F, forming a series of claws or teeth which bite into the leather as shown. This clip is secured in place in any suitable manner, preferably by means of screws G; screwed into the end of the handle within the eye. By means of the clip E and the screw and washer D the leather is securely held in place. Whenthe leather is worn it will be seen that it is easily removed and a new piece placed in position. This leather forms a surface sufliciently soft and elastic to prevent damage to the ends of the chisel handles and the like when the hammer is used for striking the same. It will be seen also that it requires no special construction of the hammer, as the attachment can easily be secured in place on any standard make of carpenters hammer.
1V hat I claim as my invention is A hammer in combination with a pad applied to the side of the hammer head; means for securing the pad to the handle of the hammer below the eye of the hammer;
metal fastening means engaged with the upper edge of the pad; and securing means for the metal fastening means passing 1 through the said fastening means into the handle within the eye of the hammer.
Dated at Calgary, Alberta, this 18th day of February, 1911.
