HAND HAMMER.
Application filed .Tune 11, 1925. Serial No. 36,536.
To all fwz-o'mf'ziz may conce/m:
Be itknown that il, Amis REICHLTNG, a citizenof the Czechoslovak Republic, and residing at Kaaden-on-the-Eger, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hand Hammer, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to an improved hand hammer, of the kind having detachable means lfor fastening the hammer head to its shaft and essentially consisting of a central fastening rod passed through said shaft, and its noveltyT consists in making the hammer head of anupper and a-lower member fitting one another and having at one end hingelike transverse bulb-and-groove engagen'ient, this permitting to use the hammer head forholding or clamping any implement therein such as for instance a screwdriver, chisel, or the like.
The accompanying` drawing illustrates the improved hammer: Fig. l is a sectional side view, Fig. 2 an end view, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the same, while Fig. 4; is a similar view to that shown in. Fig. l, representing how the hammer can be used for clamping a screw-driver therein, and Fig. 5 shows a detail in cross-section.
According tothe invention, the hammer head consists of an upper and a lower member a, 7) fitting one another and having at one end a transverse bulb-and-groove engagement at c forming a kind of hinge ther on; the hammer head having as usual an opening therein for t-he reception of its shaft. K n
As known in the art, the hammer shaft CZ is tapered and has a central boring therein, in which a round-iron rod c is slidably inserted. Said rod projects with its lower end f beyond thc central boring in the shaft d and is there screw-threaded for the reception of a fly-nut which partly engages in a recess /i 1n the shaft Z having a softleather. washer z' therein. The upper end of the rod e carries a fixed square top plate 7a s engaging in a co 1responding recess Z in the upper liaimnerliead member a so as to be flush therewith, the part 'm of the rod direct- 50 ly beneath said plate being of star-shaped cross-section Fig. 5) and engagingin the upper end ofthe central boring in the shaft CZ. y e
For fastening the tapered shaft d to the hammer head a, Z2, the same is passed with its upper end from below in the opening in the hammer headfand the rod e is inserted from above inthe central boring in the shaft until its top plate k is flush with the top of the hammer head and its lower end 7 project-s beyond the shaft d, whereupon the fly-nut g is screwed thereon and tightened, which acts to ypull the star-shaped part m of the rod in firm engagement with the upper end of the central bor'ng in the shaft d so that the latter is prevented from turning. Owing to the soft-leather washer e' forming an elastic cushion for the fly-nut g, the latter is prevented from unintentionally getting loose. l f
By the hammer head being formedL of two members, it ispossible, after somewhat loosening the fly-nut g and opening the ham-V i mer head at one end while its two members a, Z) turn then about the hinge c, to insert any implement e such as a screw-driver a (Fig. 4) between said two members and to clamp the same therein, .for its intended use, by again tightening the fly-nut g.l ln the same way, the hammer head can be used for straighteningbent nails or the like.
`Whatclaim is1- A hand. hammer comprising a hammer head and a shaft, and detachable means for fastening said head to said shaft, said hammer head consisting of. an upper and a. lower member fitting one another and held together by said fastening means, and a hingelike `transverse bulb-and-groovc engagement between said upper and lower member 'at one end of said hammer head, substantially as and for Vthe purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto ser my hand.
