P. C. HARDY HAMMER Filed July v3o, 1945 Patented Mar. l, 1949 UNITED STATES imTENT OFFICE HAMMER Paul C. Hardy, Portland, Oreg.
Application July 30, 1945, Serial No. 607,862
1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to tools and particularliT -to a hammer.
The main object of this invention is to provide a special form of soft-faced hammers in which the striking faces may be easily removed or substituted and in which various kinds of striking faces can be employed without diculty.
The second object is to provide an improved form of fastening whereby the hammer head is securely mounted on the handle, the removable end held in place by a single fastening screw.
The third object is -to construct a hammer in the class described in which the balance of the hammer is maintained, and in which the parts lend themselves to reproduction by die-casting methods.
I .accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevation of the hammer with the handle thereof broken away.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the hammer with the cap and clamping screw removed.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the assembled hammer.
Fig. 5 is a ver-tical section taken along the line 5-5 in Fig.4.
Fig. 6 is an end elevation of Fig. 5 with the striking element removed.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown .a semi-cylindrical hammer body I0 having a shank II extending from the rounded portion thereof. The shank Il is provided with a tapered recess l2 for the reception of the handle I3. The innermost end I4 of the recess I5 is tapered in ythe opposite direction than is the portion i2, in order to receive the spread portions IS-A of the handle I3 as produced by the wedge I9.
Mounted on the body l0 is a cap I'I which is also semi-cylindrical although it is preferable to make the body I9 and cap I'I slightly larger at the intermediate vpoint I8. Between the members I0 and I'I, and at each end thereof, lare formed the counter-bored recess-es I9 in which may be disposed the button-heads 20 formed on the Shanks 2i of the cylindrical striking head 22.
The striking head 22 may be of rubber, wood, composition, or hard vor soft metal, or any other desired material, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
In order to hold the members I0 and I1 to- 2 gether, there is provided a screw 23 whose end 24 bears against the wedge I6. The head 25 of the screw 23 occupies a recess 2B in the cap I1. It is desirable to employ a screw of the safety type as illustrated.
It can be seen from the foregoing, that from this simple arrangement, the striking elements 22 may be easily inserted or replaced, and are sesurely held by means of the single screw 23, which at the same time, holds end wedge I6 in place and preventing the accidental separation of the handle i3 from the hammer.
It is desirable to provide a tongue 2li-A across the end groove 2l between the members I0 and il in order to protect the screw 23 and the parts I 9 from the hammer action.
It can be seen that the side 28 of each recess I9 is inclined with relation to the `axis ofthe hammer, the purpose being to insure a wedging action which will hold the inner edge 29 of the striking element 22 against the outer edges 30 and 3| of the members I9 and II respectively.
While I have thus illustrated and described my invention, I do not intend to be limited to such forms shown herein, but I do intend to cover all such forms and modifications thereof as fall fairly within the appended claims.
I claim:
A hammer consisting of a somewhat cylindrical head divided along a plane extending through its major axis, the parts having a transverse tongue .and groove -across said plane, one portion thereof having a handle socket formed therein provided with an enlarged interior, and `the other portion of said head constituting a cap, including a clamp screw for securing said cap to the handle bearing member, `a handle mounted in said handle socket having a Wedge in the end thereof engaging said screw, yand a pair of striking inserts adapted to be held by the halves of said head.
PAUL C. HARDY.
