Description

No. 695,669. Patented Mar. I8, 1902.
' n H.- CART.ER.
AX HEADAND HANDLE THEREFOR.
(Application Med Oct. 2, 1901.)
(No Model.)
NITED- STATES ROBERT HENRY CARTER, OF KIMBOLTON, NEW ZEALAND.
AX-HEAD AND HANDLE THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION formingart of Letters Patent No. 695,669, dated March 18, 1902.
Application filed October 2, I901. erial No. 77,342. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT HENRY CARTER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Kimbolton, provincial district of Wellington, New Zealand, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in AX-Heads and in Handles Therefor and other Analogous Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. This invention consists of a special form of ax-head in which the ordinary eye is done away with and the whole of the head made of a one solid piece with aprojecting tongue that tapers downward, so as to form a wedge.
The handle for the ax is made 'with a tapered bottom end, the sides tapering outward,
and over this tapered portion fits a metal sleeve that is jammed down over it from the top end of the handle. The part of the handle within the sleeve is split downward with a V-shaped split, and into this split the tongue of the ax-head is inserted and driven down, so that its wedge shape shall cause it to be jammed therein. A set-screw or other suitable appliance may then be passed through the sleeve and a corresponding hole in the tongue, so that the head shall besecured to the handle with a greater amount of security.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the aX-h'ead. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the handle. Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a sectional elevation and cross sectional elevation of the same with an axhead inserted therein.
a is the aX-head, which is formed with a wedge-shaped tongue-b. The four sides of the tongue I) taper downward, so that a double taper shall be formed.
a is the handle, the bottom end of which is tapered outward, and over this tapered portion fits the metal sleeve d, that is also tapered, so that it may be jammed down onto the tapered portion of the handle 0. The bot tom end of the handle 0 is formed with a longitudinal V- shaped slot e, into which the tongue I) of the ax-head is placed.
The ax-head is secured to the handle 0 by inserting its tongue 12 into the slot e and jamming it hard therein. The sleeve (1 is then placed over the tapered portion of the handle and driven hard down, so as to bind the sides of the slot e upon the sides of the tongue. A set-screwf may then be passed through the sleeve d and the tongue I), so that the tongue may be still more securely fastened within the slot of the handle. tongue I) is flattened slightly, so that a strip of rubber 9 may be inserted between the tongue and the inside face of the sleeve d.
This strip of rubber will prevent the handle from jarring when the ax is in use.-
.Should the handle 0 become worn or break, I
the aX-head may be readily removed therefrom-by drawing out the set-screwy and giving the head a few sharp hits with a hammer, when it will drop out of the sleeve.
Although the handle described herein has been described in relation to a special form of ax-heads, it will be readily understood that it may be used for any kind of implement which is formed with a tapered tongue, andit is particularly applicable to Slashers.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters. Patent, is 1. -The combination of the tool-head a having a tapered tongue 6 formed integral therewith; the handle 0 flaring at its outer end, so as to form a wedge transversely and be flush The back edge of the with the edges of the tongue and having a tapering slot e in which said tongue fits; and
the tapered sleeve 01 sliding on the flaring end of the handle and driven over the same so as to clamp the slotted end of the handle tightly on the tongueb with a wedging action, as described.
2. In combination with an ax-head or other implement having a tapered tongue formed integral therewith, a handle the bottom of which is tapered outward and is provided with a V-shaped slot, a metal sleeve fitting over the tapered portion of the handle and a set-screw passing through the sleeve and the tongue, as herein specified.
3. In combination with an ax-head or other implement having a tapered tongue formed integral therewith, a handle, the bottom of which is tapered outward and provided with specification in the presence of two subscribahV-shaped slot, a metal sleeve fitting over ing witnesses. t e tapered portion of the handle and a strip 1 7 7' '1 of rubber or other elastic material inserted ROBERL HENRX CARIER' 5 between the inside of the metal sleeve and -Witnesses:
the back of the tongue, as herein set forth. J AS. WATT,
In testimony whereof I have signed this GEORGE ROSS.
