for firmly vlocking them in position and for drawing the shoulders 18 firmly against the ends of the extension l2. the lockingcap 22 is a hole which registers with the screw threaded hole 27 in the upper end oi' the vhead ll. At its outer end the hole in the cap QQ is somewhat enlarged so'that when the scrcwQ-i is inserted into the holes above mentioned the head 25 ot said screw will enter said enlarged 'portion until it is flush with the outer upper surface of the cap 22, thereby lea-ving no parts projecting beyond the pick head. The head of the screw 25 is provided with a notch Q6 and the upper part of each shank 17 adjacent to the notch 2l at the free end of said shank is designed tb be of proper form to be received in the notch 2G so that one of my removable pick points may be used as a. screw driver for removing the screw 24 or screwing it into position.
In the practicaluse of my improved pick, the miner or other user may carry a number of the points 16 and when one is dull may remove the screw @Land quickly and-easily insert another :poi/nt in the place of the one which has become dulled.
I am aware that picks have been made with detachable points but I know of none having the advantages of mine as lset forth herein. The head of the pick is Iso constructed that the larger part of the weight is in the head. The head may be made of different Amaterial and only the points need be of material capable of reeeiving high temper and being sharpened to a fine point. The advantage of the form of the socket of my dpick head is obvious insomuch as the han e may be driven into the head and the shape of the socket and the wedge therein is such that the handle will be very firmly fastened in its position.
I believe that I have special advantages in the form and construction of my removable pick points. The manner in which the points are locked in position in the head gives a very strong and rigid construction7 the shoulders 18 being drawn firmly against tl-e extensions 12 and the inner ends of the Shanks 17 being firmly locked by means of the locking cap :22. The screw 2lm'ay be operated by means of a small screw driver or by means ot' one of the extra pick points and where the pick points are used I am enabled to dispense with the use of any entri. or special tools in changing my pick points. The construction of the lugs 23 and notches Q1 is such that the 'pick point is always firmly drawn to the inward limit of its Ymovement and locked against any possible movement with relation to the pickhead.
In the middle of' The parts of -my pick are of simple 'and inexpensive construction and comparatively few operations are required in their manufacture. I know of no pick so constructed that the points may be removed and others installed in their places so' easily and with so little work. E pecially in coal and other mines the manufacture and sharpening of picks raises a very important problem. Or-
dinarily the miner is obliged to carry sevvfew points at a time on account of the'necessity of handling the handle and head in heating the points. `Where my picks are used a large number of the points may be placed in the re at once and itis, therefore, possible to heat more of them than when the ordinary picks are used. At the Sametime the labor of the blacksmith is largely reduced because he' is not obliged to handle the heads and handles of the picks.
It will be understood that variations mayI l be made in the details of the construction oi' my improved pick vwithout departing from the essential featuresl thereof. It is my intention in the present application to cover any such variations in details of construction which may be included within the I scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A pick comprising a head having a socket for a handle, opposite lateral extensions provided with longitudinal' sockets, said head being provided in its side opposite said first named socket'with a recess connnunicating with the inner ends of said sockets, removable points, each comprisingr a body having a point and a shank of smaller diameter than said body, designed Ato be received in one of said sockets and provided with a notch in its side near its inner end, a locking cap received within said recess and provided with' downwardly extending lugs for engaging"the notches in said poiu` Shanks and drawing the removable points inwardly, and means Jfor detachably securing said cap to said head.
