Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 11,1919.
Application led July 9, 1917. VSerial No. 179,605.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. Horn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pizarro, in the county of Floyd and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Pick, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention, generally stated,
relates to stone or mineral working tools, but has reference more particularly to picks designed and intended for the use of miners. It has for an obj ect the production of strong, durable and eiiicient tools of the character indicated, having bits or pick points which are readily removable, and as readily replaced by sharper points, or different bits as the nature of the work may require or suggest. b The invention also has for an object the production of a novel form of tool head, or pick-point holder; constructed and arranged to permit the said ready removal of a worn tool, and prompt substitution of a sharper tool or one presenting a dierent working end, and when so substituted to retain it'rigidly in working position without the possibility of accidental dislodgment.
A further object of the invention is that of avoiding the expense of an entire new pick each time apoint becomes dulled, bent or broken, as also to avoid the necessity of carrying several picks or like implements when a workman expects to encounter conditions requiring cutting edges or points of varying form, size, and proportions.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the present invention will be hereinafter particularly described,` and then pointed out in the claim following.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this application for Letters Patent, and whereon corresponding numerals refer to like parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved pick handle, tool holder or head, and pick points in position for use, being partly broken away for the purpose of showing more clearly, in section, the mannerfof assembling and securely retaining a pick point or other form of tool in operative position.

Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 9 indicates' a pick handle and 10 a suitable ferrule, shouldered to form a reduced shank11 near its outer end, of polygonal form, preferably rectangular in cross section beyond said shoulder, and provided near its' extremity with a transverse keyway 12. The tool holder or head comprises duplicate, reversely arranged, separable sections of special construction, and of any material capable of affording the nec essary strength and weight. These sections or members may be made of cast or wrought iron, they may if desired be malleableized, but are by preference unitary forgings. As best shown by Fig. 1 they each have a body portion 13, centrally perforated as at 14, so as to snugly receive the polygonal shank 11, oppositely disposed lateral projections or clamping arms 15, and short vertical tongues or ribs 16 projecting centrally from each side of the said bodies 13 for purposes of interlocking with and securely retaining the detachable pick-points or other tools, as will later appear.
The numeral 17 indicates a pick-point or other form of tool, having a. working point or edge 18, shouldered as at 19 near its opposite end, and terminating in a diverging shank or stock 20, which later is grooved centrally and vertically as at 21 in conformity with the size and shape of the tongues or ribs 16 aforesaid.
This being substantially the construction and arrangement of the component parts of my invention their assemblage and use will now be briefly set forth as follows:
Both of the tool holder sections or body portions 13 reversely arranged as shown, are first introduced over the shank 11, with their respective ribs 16 in contact and in alinement, thus combining to produce an oppositely disposed pair of outwardly converging clamping jaws between theclamping arms 15 forming parts of the said tool:`

The inner faces of body portions 13 are then forced into close Contact by means or a wedge 22, driven through keyway 12, with the tool shank in dovetailed relation as shown, and thus rigidly retained in operative position.
In this relation of parts it is apparent that there can be no possible rotary movement of the tool holder or head upon its supporting shank 11, nor relative movement of the pick' points or other tools in their supporting head, the latter being rigidly retained in dovetailed relation with the clamping jaws of said head, and restrained. against. any lateral movement by action of its vertical ribs 16 as aforesaid.
It will also be particularly noted that the direct thrust of the pick points or tools 16 when inv action is distributed between the outer extremities of their clamping arms l5, the ribs 16, and the end wall of the dovetailed socket wherein the shanks 20 of said tools are positioned, so that the rough usage which tools of this character usuaily receive is unable to mutilate or disigure the several contacting surfaces, or interfere thus with the ready removal or substitution of pick points or other tools.
Having` thus described my invention, what I now claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a pick the combination with a head formed oi' separable sections, of outwardly convergingclamping jaws formed by and between said separable sections, removable pick points having inwardly diverging shanks arranged and adapted to dovetail with said clamping jaws, a tongue and groove connection between the inner ends ci' said shanks and the end wall of said clamping jaws, and means for securely but detaehably interlocking said head sections and pick points together in operative relation.
