2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in too1s and is directed more particularly to improvements in end milling tools.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of an end mill which, in a general way, includes a body provided with peripherally spaced longitudinal grooves for tool bits and means for adjusting said bits radially and longitudinally in combination with locking means for said bits.
With the prior art tools of the type to which this invention relates, the cutting edges of the bits are ground and it is attempted to adjust the bits in the body so as to bring the cutting edges of the bits in the same plane. But when the tool is put on the machine it is usually found that a portion only of the bits are cutting and seldom if ever that all of the bits are cutting wherefor at best only a few bits are effective. This is due to misalignment of the arbor or plate to which the tool is secured, improper relation of the tool and work and many other causes.
According to this invention, the construction is such that the bits are adjusted with the tool on the arbor or other rotating part so that the cutting edges are positioned to cqoperate and perform their function.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other'objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the tool of the invention having parts in section for clearness;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A body or holder is represented by 2 which preferably has a tapering periphery as shown. The body is provided with a plurality of peripherally spaced longitudinally extending grooves for bits such as 4.
Said bits 4 on one side are provided with longitudinal grooves having angularly disposed sides 6 and 8, see Fig. 3. Locking screws Ill are in threaded engagement with the body and are adapted to engage in thegrooves of the bits. Said locking screws and grooves are arranged so that the screws act on the sides 8 of the grooves and force the bits inwardly or rearwardly of their grooves and lock them in adjusted positions.
A ring member I2 is secured to the body by 7 screws I4 and adjusting screws l6, which may be of the socket type, are in threaded engagement with said ring member.
These screws [6 are adapted when turned in one direction to urge the bits longitudinally of their grooves and axially of the tool.
Wedges l8 are provided in the bit grooves behind the said bits. Cap screws 20 in threaded engagement with the body are provided the heads of which bear on washers 22 engaged in notches of the wedge members, as shown in Fig. 1. As the screws 20 are turned in one direction the wedges are moved inwardly to move the bits 4 outwardly or radially of the body.
The cutting edges of the bits may be formed as may be desired and the body may have a bore 24 for receiving an arbor of a machine for rotating the tool and the ring I2 may be formed for engagement by a rotating part of a machine.
With the tool mounted on the rotating part of a machine with which it is to be used, the bits are released by the locking screws l0 and the screws 16 and 20 are adjusted to move the bits longitudinally and radially to bring the cutting edges of the bits into the desired relation so that the cutting edges thereof cooperate and all of said edges perform their function. With the bits in adjusted positions the locking screws ID are turned inwardly to lock the said bits in their respective grooves.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims ratherthan by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A tool of the class described comprising in combination, a body provided with axially extending bit grooves spaced about the periphery thereof, bits in said grooves movable axially and radially of said body provided with cutting edges at one end of the body, a ring-plate secured to the other end of said body, screws in threaded engagement with said ring-plate acting on the other ends of said bits for moving them axially, wedges in said grooves rearwardly of said bits and movable axially therein in one direction to move said bits radially of the body, screws in threaded engagement with said body acting on members received in notches provided in said wedges for moving said wedges axially for urging said bits radially of the body, and means for locking said bits in said grooves.
2. A tool of the class described comprising in combination, a body provided with axially extending bit grooves spaced about the periphery thereof, bits in said grooves movable axially and radially of said body provided with cutting edges at one end of the body, a ring-plate secured to the other end of said body, screws in threaded engagement with said ring-plate acting on the other ends of said bits for moving them axially, Wedges in said grooves rearwardly of said bits and movable axially therein in one direction to move said bits radially of the body, screws in threaded engagement with said body acting on members 25 received in notches provided in said wedges for moving said wedges axially for urging said bits radially of the body, and means for locking said bits in said grooves, said means including screws in engagement with the body at one side of said grooves having inner ends acting on one side of longitudinal grooves provided in one side of said bits to urge the opposite and an adjacent side of the bits against an opposite side of the grooves and the wedges.
