Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
Application filed January 27, 1919. Serial No. 273,405.
17 o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JOSEPH KornrvA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ax, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to axes, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,057,966, granted to Alois F. Kopriva, on April 1, 1913.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved ax having an ax head and a removable bit to permit of convenicntly and quickly removing a woi'n out or broken bit from the ax head and to replace such bit with a new one. Another object is to draw the bit securely and accurately into final position on the ax head and to hold the bit in this position against lateral displacement. n
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then speciically pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of the ax, parts be ing shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and showing a tool inserted between the ax head and the tool for dislodging the bit;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bit; and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the head.
The ax head is provided with the usual eye or socket 11 for the reception of vthe outer end of the ax handle, and the head 10 is provided with a vertically extending groove 12 forming jaws 13 and 14:, between which passes the back 15 f the bit 16 removably held in position on the head 10, as hereinafter more fully explained. The back 15 is reduced on both faces to provide shoulders 17 and 18 adapted to be seated on the outer edges of the jaws 13 and 14.
The jaws 13 and 14 are provided with tapering apertures 20 in register with elongated apertures 21 formed in the back' 15 and the said registering apertures 2O and 21 are engaged by tapering pins 22 driven into the said apertures to draw the bit 16 firmly in place on the ax head 10, that is, with the shoulders 17 and 18 abutting against the outer edges of the jaws 13 and 14. By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be noticed that when the bit 16 is drawn into final position the faces thereof are flush with the faces of the head 10 to insure proper cutting of the ax when in use.
In order to hold the back 15 of the bit 16 against up or down sliding movement in the groove 12, use is made of pins 25 engaging registering apertures 26 and notches 27, of which the apertures 26 are formed in the head 10 at the bottom of the groove 12 and the notches 27 are formed in the inner edge of the back 15. Thus the pins 25 are driven snugly into place in the apertures 26 and recesses 27 hold the back 15 against sliding movement in the groove 12. The head 10 is provided at or near its middle with an opening 30 extending beyond the inner edge of the back 15 to permit of inserting a wedgeshaped tool 31 into the opening 30 with a view to dislodge the back 15 in the groove 12 whenever it is desired to remove the bit 16 from the ax head 10.
In practice, the forward portion of the back 15 is slightly thicker than the rear portion thereof, and this thickened portion 40 is in excess of the width of the groove 12 so as to slightly spring the jaws 13 and 14 apart when inserting the bit 16 in position on the ax head 1() to insure a clamping action between the jaws 13 and 111 and the thickened portion 4:0 of the back 15.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the bit 16 can be readily placed in position on the ax head 10 and securely fastened thereon by the tapering pins 22 and the cylindrical pins 25, and these pins 22 and 25 can be readily removed and the tool 31` inserted for disconnecting the bit 16 from the head 10 whenever it is desired to replace a worn out or broken bit by a new one.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An ax comprising a head having a socket for a handle and provided with a groove, a bit having a back fitting into the said groove, the Walls of the groove in the said ax head and the said back having registering apertures therethrough spaced from the outer edges of the Walls of the groove and from the inner edge of the back respectively, of which the apertures in the hack are elongated in a direction at right angles to the outer edges of the walls in the groove in the aX head, and the apertures in the Walls of 10 the groove are tapering, tapering pins driven into the said registering apertures for drawing said hit into said groove, the said ax head and the inner edge of the said back having registering apertures and notches, and pins driven into the said registering apertures and notches for preventing vibration of the inner edge portion of the back of said bit.
