RAZOR.
Application filed June 21, 1917. Serial No. 175,999.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lilnrswon'rrr L. Mc- CAIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, inthe county.
of Wayne and Stateof Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to safety razors,
and my invention aims to furnish the usualand well known type of blade handle with a novel blade holding arm for a single or double edge blade that may be stropped, honed or sharpened similar to-the ordinary jack-knife razor. It is in this connection that I aim to provide a safety razor that may be manipulated similar to an ordinary jack-knife razor, but with a greater degree of safety should the user of my razor desire toequip the blade holding arm with a blade guard.
My invention further aims .to provide a blade holding arm with positive and reliable.
means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth for holding a detachable single or double edge blade, and the holding means is so disposed as to be readily removed to permit of detachable parts of the razor being sterilized or thoroughly cleansed.
My invention will be hereinafter described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a perspective viewv of the razor;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the blade holding arm,
partly broken away and partly in section;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away and partly in section on the line III-III of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a plan of-the blade holding arm provided with a blade guard;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away and partly in section;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a detached single edge blade, showing a slight modification of my invention,
lug.- 7 is a plan of a detached double edge blade, and 7 I Fig. 8 is a plan of a modified form of razor.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 generally denotes a razor handle composed of opposed ha ndle pieces maintained in spaced relation so as to serve as a guard or pocket for a razor blade. Such a handle Specification of Letters Patent. I
ordinarily has a blade shank pivoted in the outer end thereof, but instead of using such a blade, I pivot a blade holding arm 2 in the handle by studs or trunnions 3 adjacent the Patented am. a, rare.
inner end of the arm 2. The arm 2 is preferably oval in cross section and is hollow throughout, somewhat similar to a flattened or oval tube. The outer end of the arm 2 has a lateral slot or bifurcation 3 and intermediate the ends of said arm, the upper face or wall thereof is provided witha transverse slot 4 and a lateral slot 5 communicating with said opening. 1
In the arm 2 is a blade locking rod '6, which for the greater part of its length, corresponds in cross section to the arm 2, so that said locking quickly shifted in and out of said arm. Near the outerend of said'locking rod is a transverse groove 7 and the outer wall of said groove is. V-shaped as at 8. The inner rod may be easily and end of the locking'rod 6 is cylindrical and provided with screwthreads 9 to receive a long knurled nut 10 that abuts the end of the arm 2 to hold the rod in a locked or retracted position. The outer end of the nut 10 has a bifurcation or slot 11 in which is pivoted a cross head 12. The cross head 12 may be housed in the end of the nut so as not to interfere with a swinging movement of the arm 2 relative to the razor handle 1, but with the cross head 12 at right angles to the axis of the nut 10, the cross head permits a firm gri being obtained upon the nut for rotating tlib same to firmly anchor the rod 6 within the arm 2. In other words, the
cross head 12 serves functionall as a wrench, and to prevent the nut 10 rom becomin the r0 6 may be upset or provided with a head, as at 13 which will limit the unscrewing movement of the nut.
A preferred form of blade for the'arm 2 is designated 14 and has a single sharp edge 15. The opposite edge or back of the blade 14-. iscut away, as at 16, to provide end tongues 17 and these tongues have V-shaped notches 18. The formation of the tongues 17 also provides a slot 19 and the manner of placing the blade in engagement with the arm 2 is as follows; r
' With the nut 10 unscrewed as far as possible, and the rod 6 pushed forward or in its outermost position in the arm 2, the groove 7 of the rod 6 registers with the transverse slot 4 of said arm. The groove 7 is of a less accidentally displaced the end of pulled length than the slot 4 of the arm 2, so that the rear wall of the slot 4 will overhang the inner wall of the groove 7, and since the ends of the blade 14 are identical in design, either end of the blade may be placed in the slot 4 and in the groove 7 of the rod 6. The end of the blade may be pushed under the overhanging wall of the slot 4 and at the same time the outer end of the blade slipped into the lateral slot 3 of the arm 2. The blade is now in the longitudinal axis of the rod 6 and the inner tongue 17 has the notch 18 thereof in contact with the V-shaped wall of the groove 7, consequently the inner end of the blade cannot become laterally displaced. The rod 6 can now be retracted or relative to the arm 2 to shift the inner end of the blade 14' into the lateral slot 5 and the outer end of the blade further into the lateral slot 3. As this operation takes place, the V-shaped wall 8 of the groove 7 is carried under the overhanging portion or'inner' wall of the slot 4, and a wall of the arm 2 enters the slot 19 at the outer end of the blade 14. The nut 10 can now be rotated into abutting relation with the end of the arm 2 and by tightening said nut the blade 14 is firmly held in engagement with said arm. Before considering a guard that may be used in connection with a razor, attention will be had to Figs. 6 and 7 showing other blades. The blade designated 20 in Fig. 6 is almost the same as the blade 14, except the back edge of the blade has a bar 21 connecting the ends there of, and this bar will provide slots 19 to receive walls of the arm 2, similar to the slot 19. This type of blade is very rigid and by providing a blade of greater width both of the longitudinal edges thereof may be sharpened and used. I
In Fig. 7 there is shown a double edged blade 22 having a longitudinal slot 23, and
the end walls of said slot are provided with V-shaped notches 24, said end walls corresponding to the tongues 17 of the blade 14.
The guard shown 'inFigs. 4 and 5 com prises a convexo-concave plate 25 having the longitudinal edges thereof toothed or provided with guards 26 for the cutting edges of the blade 27 placed in engagement with the arm 2. At the inner end of the plate 25 is a sleeve 28 adapted to fit on the arm 2 and at the outer end of said blade is an inturned lip .29 adapted to engage in the outer-end of the arm,. between the wall of said-arm and the blade 27 mounted therein. The plate 25 is placed in engagement with that side of the arm 2 opposite the transverse slot 4 of said arm, so does not interfere with the placing of the blade 27 in position.
ing said arm and a lip A guard along the same lines'may be readily made for a single blade, as shown in Fig. 1. i
In Fig. 8 a blade holding arm 30 has the outer end thereof cut away, as at 31, to provide clearance for a blade 32 having openings 33 and 34. On the outer end of the arm is aslotted lug 35 under which either end of the blade may be placed. Slidable in the arm 30 is a rod 36 provided with a groove 37 to receive the inner end of the blade, and said rod maybe adjusted, similar to the rod 6, to lock the blade under the lug 35 and under the overhanging portion 38 of thea-rm.
What I claim is 1. In a. safety razor, a handle having spaced side pieces, a blade holding arm pivoted between the side pieces of said handle, and adapted to be swung between the side pieces of the handle, a blade in the outer end of said arm, a locking rod in said arm operatable at the inner end thereof andadapted for locking said blade in the outer end of said arm, and a detachable guard on the 3. A safety razor comprising a blade hold- 1 ing arm provided with lateral slots, a shiftable rod in said arm provided with a groove,
- a blade cut away so that either end thereof may be placed in the groove of said rod and both ends enter the lateral slots of said arm,
a nut onthe inner end of said rod abutting said arm adapted to shift said rod to lock said blade in engagement with said arm, and a guard for said blade having a sleeve to engage said arm and a lip toengage in the end of said arm.
'4. A razor comprising a blade holding arm, a shiftable rod in said arm, a reversible blade held in said arm by said rod, and a guard on said arm for said *blade, said guard having a sleeve atone end thereof embracat the opposite end thereof extending into said arm.
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
