w. J. DAVIS SHARPENING DEVICE FOR SAFETY RAZOR BLADES Filed Junu 24, 1921 max m? [liar/2P]- Patented Mar. 20, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. DAVIS, 01' KONIBEAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SHABPENING DEVICE FOR SAFETY-RAZOR BLADES.
Application filed June 24, 1921. Serial No. 480,212.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. DAVIS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices for Safety-Razor Blades; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sharpening devices for safety razor blades and more particularly to the blades for Auto Strop razors.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device such as above referred to including novel means for holding the blade while the latter can be sharpened either on the usual strop or hone.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder for blades so arranged that it will engage the blade and firmly hold the same while the latter is being stropped in the usual manner, and which is of such construction that the blade can be quickly removed therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a sharpening device for razors and the like. which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. forming a part of the present application and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention showing the razor blade in position;
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken therethrough;
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the locking plunger removed; and,
Figure 5 is a similar view of the razor blade removed.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views. the numeral 6 designates in general my improved razor sharpening device which consists of a tubular handle 7, one end of which is closed by a.
A spring actuated plunger 15 is slidable in the end of the sleeve adjacent the back portion 10 and is provided at its inner end with a projection 16 designated to fit within one end of a spring 17, the opposite end of which bears against the cap 8. forcing the plunger to its outermost position.
A pin 18 projects from the side of the lun er 15 through a slot 19 formed in the iand le 7 adjacent one end thereof and is provided with a terminal head 20 which serves as a finger grip for the operator in actuating the plunger 15. The outer end of the plunger 15 is bevelled as at 21 to fit within the groove 22 provided in the opposite end of the blade 14, while the forward side of the plunger 15 is thinned or cut away as at 23 to prevent interference when the blade is being sharpened by its engagement with the usual strop or hone not shown in the drawing.
The outer surface of the handle 7 may be milled. as shown at 24 to provide a means whereby the same can be gripped by the operator when desired and to prevent slipping while the back portion 10 is relatively flat, which also prevents interference while in operation.
From the fore oing description taken in connection with tie accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a razor sharpening device i provided which is particularly desi ned for use in holding safety razor blades 0 the Auto Strop type. and which when held therein will permit of the blade being honed or stropped in the usual manner. and it should be further understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is The herein described sharpening device for safety razor blades. comprising a hollow tubular handle. a back formed upon one end of the handle, a lip formed upon the outer end of said bwck, a lug provided upon the lip for engaging a notch provided in one end of the safety razor blade, a plunger mounted in said handle, a pin extending from the plunger through a slot in said handle, a projection upon said plunger, :1 spring positioned within the handle and engaging the projection of the plunger, one side of the plunger being cut away and one end of the plunger being bevelled to engage a notch 10 In witness whereof I have hereunto set my I hand.
