H. GOLDBLATT CUTTING 'TooL Filed Nev. 22. 1924 INVENTOR.
yyfless:
I .664 ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 12, 1927.
UNiTED STATES HARRY GOLDIBLATT, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
CUTTING TOOL.
Application filed November 22, 1924.
My invention relates to improvement in cutting tools.
It is particularly well adapted for use in cutting away a portion of material for marl-:ing plastered walls to resemble tiling or masonry. such as is common practice in bathrooms, kitchens and hallways.
One or the objects of my invention is to provide a novel tool of the kind described that is easily and quickly adjusted to different cutting depths.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel tool of the kind described which can be used in cutting uniform grooves of the same width and depth with the one setting and in which the material cut away will be kept clear or the finished groove.
A still further object of my invention 1s to provide a novel tool of the kind described, which is cheap to make, strong and durable. not liable to get out of order and in which a worn blade may be easily and quickly replaced with a new one without 2 the aid of special tools.
The novel features of my invention are hereinatter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Jig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved tool.
Fig. :2 is a top view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a tl ragmental view, partly broken away, showing the blade in the operative position.
Fig. 4 is a t'ragn'iental sectional view on the line '-ll: of Fig. 3.
Fig 5 is a perspective view of one of the 40 blades.
Fig. 6 is a top view of a modified form he blade. Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the diii erent views. 1 and 2 designate respectively two parallel members mounted at opposite sides of a shorter middle member 3 to which they are secured in any suitable manner, as by rivets at, so as to form a handle. The projecting forward ends of the members 1 and 2 and the adjacent end of the middle member form a notch 5 which communicates with Serial No. 751,430.
parallel longitudinal slots 6 between the member 3 and the members 1 and 2.
A U shaped blade 7 has its arms adapted to be removably and adjustably mounted in the slots 6 respectively. Said arms are respectively provided in corresponding lateral edges with two notches 8 of greater width than the diameter of a clamping screw 9, which is adapted to be extended through the notches 8 and through holes provided there for in the members 1, 2 and 3, the hole in the member 2 being threaded and having the screw 9 fitted thereto.
This construction permits of the insertion and removal of the blade 7, and of its adjustment radially in all directions or circumferentially on the screw 9. By tighten ing the latter, the blade is securely held in the position to which it may be adjusted. By providing the lateral notches 8 in the arms of the blade, the latter is held from accidental pulling out of the handle, while enabling its easy insertion or removal without removing the screw.
In the operation of the tool, the operator, after loosening the screw, adjusts the blade to the desired position, and then tightens the screw, thus securing the blade rigidly R0 to the handle. The tool may then be used to cut grooves, one at a time, which will be of uniform width and depth and which will have a smooth neat appearance, the notch 5 co-operating with the blade to carry the cut out material clear or the finished groove.
The modified form of blade 10, shown in Fig. 6 is the same in construction, mode of operation and function as the blade 7, already described, with the exception that W the cutting portion of the blade 10 is V- shaped, while the cutting portion of the blade 7 is semi-circular in cross section.
I do not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claim may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
.Vhat I claim is:
In a device of the kind described, a handle comprising three members disposed side by side, a U shaped blade having its arms disposed respectively between the middle memher and said outer members, said arms having correspondingly disposed notches in their lateral edges, and a clamping screw extending through and. connecting said outer members by which they may be made to clamp said arms against theiniddle member, said screw extending through and being laterally insert-able in and of substantially less diameter than said notches and removable from said arms through said notches, the blade thereby being circnmlerentially and adjustable radially in all directions relatively to said screw.
Intestiniony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HENRY GOLDBLATT.
