G,- Y. MORTON. .CHASER AND REAMER. APPLICATION FILED DEC- I8. 1916.

GEORGE Y. MORTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CHASER. AND nEAMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1917.
Application filed December 18, 1916. Serial No. 137,555.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,- GEORGE Y. MORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chasers and Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective tool which will serve both as a chaser and as a reamer, that is, will remove the burs and roughnesses on the end of a pipe made in cutting the pipe, whether said burs be on the outer surface or on the inner surface thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved tool showing it in use as a chaser; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it in use as a reamer, one handle being omitted; Fig. 3 is a side view of a pair of cutters detached; Fig. 1 is'a detail cross section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates an annular base preferably made of malleable iron formed with diametrically opposite bosses 2 having screw threaded sockets 3 in which are received oppositely extending handles 4, by which the base can be conveniently turned to ream or chase the end of a pipe. It is also formed with four equidistant radially extending narrow holes or slots 5, and in said slots are received the reduced ends 6 of cutters 7 of tempered steel.
Said cutters are formed in pairs from a piece of sheet metal and extend from a common vertex at an angle with each other, and the junctures of said pairs are formed with slots 8, 9, to receive each the juncture of the other pair of cutters, the slot 8 in one pair of cutters being formed in the inner end of their juncture and the slot 9 in the other pair of cutters being formed in the outer end of their juncture. WVhen said out ters have been placed in position, with the juncture of each pair in the slot formed in the juncture of the other pair,'s0 that the pairs of cutters extend in planesat rightangles to each other, their reduced ends 6 are inserted in the slots or holes 5 in the base, and are then swaged therein, and, when the inner ends of the handles 4 are screwed into the sockets 3, the tool is complete.
The inner and outer surfaces of each cutter are each formed with two sharp projecting cutting edges 10, to cut when the tool is turned in either direction.
The mode of use of the tool will be easily understood from the foregoing description. When used as a reamer, it is pressed into the pipe and rotated therein, or the pipe is caused to rotate around it, and, when used as a chaser, it is moved over the end of the pipe and pressed against the same while rotated around the pipe or while the pipe is rotated in it.
I claim A combined reamer and chaser comprising an annular base, and cutters extending from said base, each cutter having both inner and. outer cutting surfaces, said cutters being integral with each other in pairs and slotted at their junctures, one of said slots being in the inner end of said juncture and the other in the outer end thereof, and each slot receiving the unslotted portion of the other juncture.
GEORGE Y. MORTON.
