Description

E. O. HICKEY. BORING TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 23, I914- 1 62, 1 63. Patented Nov. 30, 1915.
I "I v ED. H ICKEY Eltbomu;
ELMER, O. HICKEY, OF NEW BRIGHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
BORING-TOOL.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMERVO. I-IroKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boring-Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in boring tools and has relation more particularly to a device'of this general character especially designed and adapted for use as a reamer; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a stock provided with a plurality of radiating cutting tools capable of adjustment under the influence of a mandrel.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved boring tool whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be craefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, Iwill now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a boring tool constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the working end of the tool as disclosed in the preceding views; and Fig. 4: is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the working face or end of a tool constructed in accordance with a further embodiment of my invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a stock of any ordinary or preferred dimensions and configuration having produced in one extremity at the axial center thereof the longitudinally disposed recess 2 circular in cross section and provided with the radially disposed openings 3 intersecting such axial opening 2 intermediate the length thereof, the portion of the axial opening 2 forwardly of the open- Specification of Letters Patent.

ings 3 being screw-threaded, as indicated at 4, in order to afford an adjustable engagement with the mandrel 5, for purposes to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
The openings 3 are adapted to receive the cutting tools or bits 6, the inner ends where- I set screws 7 which are adapted to project within the openings 3 and clampingly en gage the cutting tools or bits 6 and in order that this clamping engagement may be facilitated, I find it of advantage to have the engaging faces of such bits or tools flattened, as indicated at 8. It is also to be observed that the inner extremities of the screws 7 are provided with the biting teeth 14 whereby the bits 6 are the more eifectively held against endwise movement by the screws 7 It is to be observed that the adjacent cutting tools or bits 6 are not perpendicularly related but are disposed at diflering angles preferably ninety-five degrees and eightyfive degrees, by which arrangement I have found in practice that the best results'may be obtained.
In the form of invention illustrated in Fig. 4, a boring tool is set forth which is adapted to be used for heavy work and it is to be observed that in lieu of having the cutting implements or tools 6 of increased length, I interpose within the radial openings 3 inwardly of such cutting implements or bits 6*, the studs or pins 9 which are adapted to coact with the mandrel 5 as has been hereinbefore set forth. I also find it of advantage to provide inconnection with the pins 9 the locking screws 10 disposed through the adjacent end of the stock in a manner similar to the set screws 7 In order to efl'ectively hold or lock the mandrel 5 against accidental axial rotation which would otherwise result in an endwise adjustment thereof, I thread radially through the stock 1 forwardly of the openings 3 the screw 11 adapted to have its inner extremity contact with the pin 12, the
inner extremity whereof'being adapted'to engage the periphery of the mandrel.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a boring tool that my. invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish tobe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts'herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as defined by the scope of the claim appended hereto.
I claim: r
A device of the character described comprising a stock provided with an axially disposed bore in one extremity and having radially disposed openings in communication therewith, bits of a length in excess of the radius of the stock positionedlwithin the radially disposed openings, the outer extremities of the bits being provided with cutting edges, a mandrel adjustable through the bore for imparting outward movement to the bits, the inner extremity of the mandrel being tapered and the adjacent extremities of the bits being correspondingly beveled, set screws disposed longitudinally through the stock and coacting with the bits for holding the same in their adjusted positions, the surfaces of the bits engaged by the set screws being flattened, the engaging extremities of the set screws being provided with biting teeth, and a member adjustable laterally through the stock forwardly of the bits to engage the mandrel to lock said mandrel in its adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELMER o. HICKEY.
