The hammer head comprises the body part indicated as a whole by A and the cover or clamping part indicated as a whole by B. The body part A comprises the inner or core section 10 and the outer section 11 which is integral therewith. The hammer faces or tips F may be of metal, rubber, fiber or any desired material and are provided with frusto-conical or dove-tail extensions 28 for receiving the dove-tail pockets formed by the hammer head parts A and B. The faces can be read ily interchangeably applied. The clamping part B is removed and the faces are then applied in the dove'tail pockets 12 and 13 and then when the part B is applied the pockets 19 and 20 will receive the faces and they will be securely, rigidly and solidly locked to the hammer head. All blows on the faces will be directly communicated to the body part A of the hammer and the screws 21 will be entirely free from strain. In the modifications shown in Figs. 7 and 8,-the two parts C and D of the head are alike except that the part B has the flange 24: integral therewith for receiving the opening 25 in the part D, a handle when inserted being thus engaged entirely by the part C. Theflange and opening 25 are also tapered so as to assure a secure and rigid fit of the parts. V
Having described ourinvention, we claim as follows:
1. In a hammer head, the combination of a solid one-piece body part, a boss on one side of said body part, there being a passageway through said body part andboss for receiving and securing a handle, the ends at one side of said body part projecting to form semi-circular dovetail pockets, a clamping part intimately fitting against the side of the body part and having a hole for receiving the body partboss, said clamping part overhanging the ends of the body part to form semi-circular dovetail pockets for cooperating with the pockets of the body part, hammer faces having dovetail extensions for being received in said pockets, and
screws for holding said clamping part to the body part, said boss being tapered and said clamping part hole being correspondingly tapered to intimately receive said boss when said clamping part is secured to the body part by said screws, whereby blows against the hammer faces will be transmitted entirely through the clamping part and boss directly to the body part and said screws relieved from all transverse strain.
2. In a hammer head, the combination of a body part and clamping part, said body part comprising-a core section of circular cross section and an enveloping section half way surrounding said core section, said enveloping section extending beyond the ends of the core section to form semi-circular dovetail pockets, said clamping part being of the same shape as said enveloping section, screws for detachably securing said sections together, said clamping part extending beyond the ends of the body. part and forming semi-circular dovetail pockets registering having a hole tapered to intimately and securely fit said. bosswhen saidclampingpart is secured to, the body part by said screws, whereby blows against the hammer faces will be transmitted through said clamping part and boss directly tothe body'npart and said screws protected against transverse strain.
