PATENT oFF cE.
CHARLES E. SGHEOEDEB AND AUGUST A. QUEDENSIIEY, OF CHICAGO, IIlIlINOIS.
HAMMER.
Original application filed January 19, 1922, Serial No. 530,471. Divided and this applicaton filed October Serial No. 596,727.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES F. SCI-IROEDER and AUeUsr A. QUnnnNsLEY, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to hammers of that type in which the hammer body of hard metal such as cast iron or steel is constructed to be adapted to receive and clamp faces of softer metal, and this application may be considered as a divisional application arising out of original application Serial No. 530,471 filed January 19, 1922, in which original application the hammer herein claimed is shown but cannot be specifically claimed.
The construction of our improved hammer is clearly shown on the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the hammer head partly broken away,
Fig. 2 is an inner side elevational'view of the head with parts broken away,
Fig. 3 is a vertical diametral section on plane 3-3, Fig. 2 of the head showing the parts separated ready for assembly, and
Fig, 4 is a sectional view on plane 4-4, Fig. 2.
The hammer head is constructed of the two body parts A and B each'in the form of an integral casting of cast iron, steel or any other suitable metal. The body parts or halves are each of semi-circular cross section throughout and When brought together form the head body of circular cross section throughout but tapering towards the ends. The part A has the tapered boss 10 extending at right angles from the middle thereof, and the part B has the tapered hole 11 for snugly receiving the boss when the parts are brought together. Through the part A and the boss 10 extends the hole 12 for receiving the hammer handle 7:, the handle being securely held in the part A by means of a wedge 13. One of the parts, as for example the part A, has screw holes 14; and 15 for receiving screws 16 and 17 which thread into theopening's 18 and 19 provided in the I A and B are secured together. These pockets receive the dovetail ends 24 of faces 25 which may be of lead, copper, brass, fibre, rawhide or any other desired material, the dovetail ends being securely and tightly held so that the faces seat accurately and tightly against the hammer body when the parts A and B are secured together. By making the body parts in the form of similar halves with substantially the same amount of metal and weight the parts are greatly strengthened and furthermore each presents the same abutment area at its ends to the faces. When the parts are securely drawn together by the screws with the tapered boss fitting accurately and snugly in the tapered hole the parts function together like a solid head to relieve the screws from any blow .strain and also to protect the handle. The
long boss extending entirely through the part B receives the force of the blows on the part B and distributes it to the part A, in this mannuer fully protecting the handle, and relieving the screws of all strain except that necessary to keep the parts A and B held together.
Having described our invention, we claim as follows: i
In a hammer, the combination of a head and a handle, said head comprising an outer body part and an inner body part, one of said parts havin a boss extending therefrom and there being a handle receiving hole through said part and boss, said boss being tapered on the outside, said otherpart having a hole for receiving the handle and said hole beingtapered to snugly fit said boss when the parts are brought together, semicircular dovetail pockets in the ends of each part adapted to form circular dovetail pockets when' the parts are brought together, and faces having dovetail extensions received in said dovetail pockets when said parts are brought together to be thereby securely locked in said parts said parts except for said holes and said boss and said pockets being of semi-circular cross section throughout whereby to forni the head of circular cross section.
In Witness whereof, We hereunto subscribe our names this 19th day of October, A. D.
CHARLES F. SCHROEDER. AUGUST A. QUEDENSLEY.
