Description
M. E. BRIGGS.
Last-Fasteners.
Patented June 23,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT Q-FFICE.
MORRILL E. BRIGGS, OF EAST WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAST-FASTENERS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 152,210., dated June 23, 1874; application filed May 31, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRILL E. Bnrees, of East Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in the Attachment of the Block to a Last; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which 1 forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the mode of securing the upper part of lasts to the lower part thereof during the process'of manufacturing shoes, &c. 5 and consists in the employment of a slotted metallic plate secured firmly on the upper side of the last proper, in combination with a screw having a conical head attached to the under side of the block, as will now be fully shown and described.
On the drawing, Figure 1 represents a ground plan of the last proper. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the last and block, and Fig. 3 represents a crosssection of the last and block as taken at the place shown at A B on Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the dilferent parts of the drawing.
a represents the last proper, and b represents the block or upper part of the last. Formerly it was the usual custom to secure the block to the last during-the process of manufacturing shoes, &c., by means of an ordinary nail driven through the upper part of the block into the last; but as thereby the last was more or less injured by continued nailing, I have substituted a simpler and better mode of attaching the said block to the last. The same consists in a slotted metallic plate, 0, secured to the last by means of screws or their equivalents, as shown. A screw, d, is screwed in the under side of the block b, and is made of a diameter a little less than the width of the slot in the plate 0, and has ahead that is made tapering, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. On the under side of the slotted plate 0 is made a recess, as shown at e on Fig. 1, for the head of the screw (1 to rest in when the block b is in its proper place in relation to the last a. The block b can be instantlysecured to the last a by guiding the head of the screw cl in the slot in the plate 0 till the said screw rests in the countersink 2, when the last is ready for use. The block can as quickly be removed by sliding the screwd out from the said slotted plate 0 without injury to the last or block.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is
In combination with a last, a, and its block b, the slotted-spring plate 0, with its recess 6, and the adjustable screw d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of May, 1873.
