Description

UNITED ESTATES PATENT OEErcE.
CRNELIUS HAMLER, OF NEW'IN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO ANDREW SHINER, OF SAME PLACE.,
IMPROVEMENT lIN SCVTHE-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,623, dated August 1, 1871 antedated July 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GoRNELIUs HAMLER, of Newton, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening and Adjustin g Scythes and I do' hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencev being had to the accompanying dra-wing forming part of this specification, in whiclb- Figure I1 is a rear view of the lower end of a scythesnath, to which the scythe is connected by my improved device. Fig. 2 is a detail face View of the part attached to the scythe, partly in section, through the line x x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view ofthe part attached to the snath, partly in section, through the line a; lo, Fig. 1.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for connecting a scythe to a scytlie-snath which shall be simple in construction and easily adjusted so as to enable the scythe to be conveniently hung out or in, or moved so as to be parallel with the snath, for convenience of carriage 5 an d' it consists in the construction of the parts ofthe device, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an ordinary scythe-snath, to the under side of the lower end of which is securely attached a plate, B, having a circular projection, C, formed upon its middlepart. The circular projection C has a set of teeth formed upon its face around its outer edge, as shown in Fig. 3. D isa plate hav.- ing a hole formed in it near its upper end to receive the toe ofthe shank of the scythe E. rIhe other or lower end ofthe plate D is secured to the lower part of the Scythe-shank by a bolt and nut, as shown in Figs. l and 2. Upon the middle part of the plate D is formed a circular projection, F, having a set oil teeth formed around the outer edge of its face, as shown in Fig. 2. The teeth ofthe projections (l and F should be tine, so that the scythe may be accurately adjusted or set out or in slightly, as required. This construction also enables the scythe to be adjusted to extend along the suath for convenience in carrying it. G is a bolt passing through the center of the plates D E and B C and through the lower part ot' the snath A, and secured in place by a nut, as shown in Fig. l and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, so that by loosening the nut upon the bolt G the scythe may -be adjusted as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plate B having circular ratcheted projection C, the apertiued plate D having ratcheted projection E, and the bolt G, combined, as described, with the snath A and scythe E, for the purpose speciiied.
CORNELIUS HAMLER.
