Description

No. v118,571. ParentediAug. 29,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,571, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it knoWn that I, JAMES H. WOLFE, of Lytle City, in the State of Iowa, have invented a certain Improvement on Hay-Knives, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement has reference to that class of knives usually called hand or foot-knives, as they are operated by the hand. or foot or by both, and are used for cutting hay oi from the stack or mow as it may be required for feeding horses or cattle.
The accompanying drawing shows a hay-knife constructed under my improvement, Figure l being a top View, and Fig. 2 a side vieur of the implement.
The several parts are designated by the following letters: a, indicates the handle; b, the stirrup or step for the foot; c, the jog-off to clear the toe from the stack; d, the arms for the knives; and e, the knives. If made of malleable cast-iron the parts b, c, and l can be made cheap and durable of one plain casting, though these parts can also be readily made as one piece by forging and Welding. The knives e are connected to each other and to the arms by bolts f, with screw-Shanks iitting into female screws in the knives, or the bolts may pass through holes in the knives and be secured by nuts.
This Way of attaching the knives allows of their easy and convenient removal for grinding, and yet When attached gives them a irm and secure hold on the arms.
I claim as my invention- The hay-knife, constructed as herein recitedt'. e., having the handle, stirrup, jog-ofi", arms, and detachable knives, as set forth.
This specication signed this 6th day of May, 1871.
