Description

Witnesses: Inventor UNITE STATES -AENT Prion.
SAMUEL W. POPE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOVEL=PLOWS.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAML. W. POPE, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Shovel-Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to that class of shovelplows which consists in certain details of construction.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a partial sectional side elevation, of my invention.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A A represent the handles of the plow, between which, at their lower ends, is firmly bolted the standard 13, as shown.
0 represents the beam, which is of the usual construction, except in that, instead of being I tenoned into the standard or otherwise rigidly connected thereto, as is usual, it is united by a hinge-joint, D D. The plate D is securely bolted to the lower side of the beam at its rear end, and is provided with a tenon, which rests in the socket of the plate D and is secured thereto by means of a pin, as shown. The plate D is securely bolted to the standard, and is provided at its lower end with a suitable socket or depression for the reception of the shovel. The plate is also provided with a top or projection, w, as shown in Fig. 2, which is intended to receive a portion of the strain, and
regulate this change and secure it in any desired position, the rod E is provided, which is curved in the arc of the circle, as shown, and furnished with screw-threads and nuts. It is preferably rigidly secured to the beam in any suitable manner, and is adjusted through the opening in the standard by means of the nuts and washers e. The shovel F is secured to the plate D by means of a bolt. If desired, this plate, without the hingeconnection, may be applied to the standards of double or triple shovel plows. The advantage of attaching the shovel to the plate instead of directly to the standard is that the plate, from its position, does not become worn; consequently a new shovel can at any time be made to replace the old with the certainty of having it fit accurately in its seat.
The construction described is simple in all its parts, and yet possesses the required strength.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The metal plate attached to the end of the standard, and provided with a recess for the reception of the shovel, and with the projection w, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 7th day of October, 1870.
SAMUEL WV. POPE.
