IMPROVEMENT IN SHOWAKERS AWLHAFTS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,0416, dated April 21, 1874; application filed February 21, 1874.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE T HUCLCHrNs, of Dover, of the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoemakers Awl- Hafts; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of one of my improved awl hafts orhandles.

My invention relates to awl-ha-fts having metallic and yielding heads, and split and jawed contractile shanks; and consists in the combination of a countersunk cap to encompass the handle with such handle, the split shank, and the compound head vscrewed upon the shank, all being substantially as hereinafter explained, and shown in the drawing.

In carrying out my invention I combine with the wooden handle A, its countersunk metallic cap D, and the split and jawed shank O, extending into such cap and handle, and provided with a male screw, a, as shown, a metallic disk or head, D, furnished with a female screw, l), and having the leather or yielding head E connected to it (the disk) by screws c c, all being constructed and arranged as shown in the drawing. The screws c c have their heads against the base of the handle, and therefore are not only covered so as to be out of sight,

but are protected from becoming accidentally unscrewed. The metallic disk D supports both the yielding head E and the female-screw projection f, and protects the handle from injury. The cap, by resting against the entire end of the handle, and being eountersunk, as shown at c, to receive suoli, prevents the handle from being split.

In order to keep the disk, as well as the cap, from turning around on the handle, pins or dowels may be employed, one, h, being extended from the cap into the handle, and one or more being projected from the base of the handle into or through the disk.

I do not claim an awl-haft constructed as represented in the drawings of the Patent No. 6,261, and described in such patent, as in such the metallic head which supports the elastic head is not screwed upon the split shank, as it is in my awl-haft. v

I claim- The cap B, countersunk at c, to encompass the handle A, as shown, in combination with the said handle, the split shank O, and the head D E, screwed uponrthe shank, and arranged at the upper end of the handle, all being as specified.
