NlTED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD F. JONES, OF FARMINGTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,022, dated May 3, 1881.
Application filed January 18, 1881. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD F. JONES, of Farmington, of the county of Strafford, of the State of New Hampshire, haveinventedanew and useful Iin provement in Shoe-MakersLasts; and I do hereby declare the same to be declared in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figures 1 and 2 are opposite side views, Fig. 3 a bottom view, Fig. 4 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 5 a transverse section, of a last provided with my invention. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the combined metallic toeguard and side re-enforces. Fig. 7 is hereinafter described.
Wooden lasts are not only liable to crack lengthwise, but to become broken away at the edge of the sole, from the ball to the toe thereof, such being due to shrinkage or warping of the wood and to pegs and nails driventhrough the soles into the lasts.
Devices as hereinafter described are to prevent such injury to a wooden last, and in order therefor I provide the last A, or combine with it on its sides and at their junction with the sole two strips or re-enforees, B O, of metal, they being arranged as represented. In the drawings they are shown as in one piece with and projecting back from a toe-guard, D, which is ametallic plate arranged with the toe and sole of a last in manneras represented, and fastened to the said last by screws to a,
which go through the plate and screw into the last. i
To confine the side re-ent'orees to the last, I use rivets E, going entirely through the last and the two re-enforees, each of such rivets being screw-threaded throughout its shank, and screwed into the wood of the last, where therein,in order for it, not only with the re-enforecrs to prevent splitting or cracking of the last, but to accomplish this with additional effect by means of the screw-threads.
In Fig. 7 one of the screw-threaded rivets is shown, it having its head nicked like an ordinary wood-screw, audits shank screw-threaded from head to end.
By having the re-enforeers attached to or in one piece with the toe-guard, theyserve to mutually support each other on the last.
I do not claim a metallic toe-guard and side re-enforces or strips of metal made in separate pieces and fastened to a wooden last by screws going into but not through it.
What I claim as my invention is as follows, V12:
1. The wooden last provided with the metallic side re enforces an (1 their screw-threaded connecting-rivets passing entirely through the last, arranged with such last as set forth.
2. The wooden last provided with the connected toe-guard and side re-enforees, and with the screw-threaded connecting-rivets, all arranged and applied substantially as set forth.
EDWARD F. JONES.
