a novel brad setter which shall be simple and inexpensive as regards its construction; durable, eflicient and reliable in practical service; which shall have a contact-surface at its bottom, and be capable of releasably supporting at its tip-portion, with the bottom face thereof in registry lengthwise, or approximately. so, with the plane of said contact-surface, a brad, or analogous fastening element; and which shall possess certain well-defined advantages over prior analogous constructions.
The invention consists in the combinations, details and parts whereby, together with the novel disposition and relative arrangement of said parts, the attainment of the foregoing object is rendered practicable, all of which will be hereinafter more specifically referred to and set forth in the appended claim.
The' invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters denote like parts throughout the respective views, as to which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a brad setter embodying our said improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, the tip-portion being shown partially in central, vertical, longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of same, showing more clearly the contact-surface of the device, and the manner in which a brad or the like is releasably held relatively to .said contact-surface. Fig. 4: is a front-end elevation of the device.
In carrying out our invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, we make use of an elongated body 2, formed from any suitable material, preferably metal stock of any appropriate cross-sectional contour, and provided at its bottom with a flat contact-surface 2, said contact-surface being here shown as coextensive lengthwise with the body aforenamed, though the same may, in practice, be otherwise arranged.
There is formed in the body 2, or more specifically its tip-portion 2", at the front end thereof, a fastener-receiving socket 3, said socket being measurably'intersected by the plane of the contact-surface 2, as clearly shown in the drawing.
We contemplate providing the body 2 with a finger-piece 3, which may be conveniently accomplished by reducing said body, as at the point 3", to form a tang or shank 4:, for the reception of the finger-piece aforenamed, said finger-piece being adjusted in place on said tang or shank, under a force i or pressure sufficient to causethe same to effectively-retain its grasp thereon, or duly l fastened in position, by means of any common and well-known fastening element or elements, when thus adjusted.
More or less of the exterior surface of the body 2, as between its tip-portion 2 and a point at or adjacent to its tang or shank 4, the contact-surface aforenamed excepted, may be suitably milled or otherwise roughened, to the end that the device may be more effectively grasped,and hence controlled, by the user. 1
WVhere the fastening element, as thebrad 4, to be set or urged in place, by means of our im oroved brad setter, is tapered lengthwise rom its butt, or a point adjacent thereto, to its pointed or entering end, we
purpose forming the socket 3 in such a mannor that the same shall lie in parallelism with, or axially in relation to, the longitudinal axis of the body 2, while the plane of the contact-surface 2, still measurably intersecting said socket, shall lie at an angle or inclination to said longitudinal axis of the body 2, all as clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. In other words, the contact-surface 2 gradually tapers or converges from the shank-end of the body 2, toward the longitudinal axis thereof, and measurably intersects the socket 3, at the front end of said body, or more specifically at the front'end of its tip-portion 2".
It will be observed, in this connection, that the finger-piece 3 is segmental in general form, the lower portion thereof being is in place on the tang or shank 4, shall register flush, or approximately so, with the plane of the contact-surface 2'.
While our improved device, asherein defined, may be advantageously availed of quite generally for the setting of brads, or fasteners similar thereto in form, the same is more particularly int-ended for the setting of brads, 01' like fasteners, in the several rails of a window-sash, or the back-bead of a so-called picture frame, where the object to be held in place, as a pane of glass, picture, diploma, or the like, is fiat, and it being important that little or no play shall exist between the margins of such object and the brads, or the like, availed of for holding the same in place. In practice, therefore, and as regards the purposes for which the device is particularly intended, the user inserts a brad a, or the like, butt foremost into the socket 3, Where it rests unfastened; then places the device as a whole, with said brad or the like disposed as stated, on, say, and with its contact-surface 2 engaging, the pane of glass to be fastened within the sash provided to receive it, care being exercised to the end that when the device is so positioned, the pointed end of the brad, or the like, supported thereby, shall be presented in the direction of the adjacent sash-rail. Whereupon the user, placing a finger of one of his hands against the upstanding face of the finger-piece 3, and grasping the body 2, as along its roughened surface aforenamed, with one of more of the remaining fingers of his same hand, or opposite hand, thrusts or urges the device as a whole end- Wise forwardly, thereby causing the brad 4, or the like, to penetrate and become firmly inserted within said adjacent sash-rail, with its butt-portion closely overlying the adjacent margin of said pane of glass; it being understood that in this operation, the device is to be positioned, as above explained, on the glass aforenamed at a point suitably removed from the sash-rail aforenamed.
Reversing the above-named endwise movement of the device as a whole will result in leaving the brad 4, or the like, firmly positioned, as stated, within said sash-rail, and the socket 3 vacant to receive a fresh brad, or the like. I
The use of the device under other, and more or less analogous, conditions will be readily comprehended from the foregoing.
It will be seen that our improved brad setter is well adapted for the purposes for which it is intended; and further that the same may be modified to a considerable extent, particularly as regards the employment or omission of the finger-piece 3, the extent to which the contact-surface 2 shall intersect the socket 3, the roughening of the body 2, and other minor details of the gen eral construction, all without materially departing from the spirit and principle of our invention as expressed in the claim hereto appended.
We claim:
A brad setter consisting of an elongated piece of metal having a flat face provided with a groove therein extending longitudinally from one end of the piece a distance less than the length of a brad and being of a diameter sufiicient to closely receive the brad.
