v. KALiNOWSKI ICE PICK Filed Nov. 13. 1922 3144x211 You Kali TLEI w 5111' Vinita 1" 8 w W Patented June 10, 1924.
UNITED VICTOR KALINO'WSKI, or oHI'oaeo, ILLINOIS.
ICE PICK;
Application filed November 13, 1922. Serial No. 600,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR KALINowsKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Picks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ice picks.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a guard member for ice picks, which will prevent liability of injury to the hands of a person during an ice splitting operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a relatively simple kind of ice pick, which is extremely practical, simple in construction, durable, and which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the drawing, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken through the improved ice pick, showing the various details thereof.
Figure 2 is a. perspective view of the improved guard member which is the principal part of this invention.
Figure 3 is a transverse cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown but the preferred embodiment of this invention, the letter A generally designates the improved ice pick, which preferably includes the handle 10; pick element 11; and guard member 12.
The handle 10 preferably includes the wooden body portion 13, providing an enlarged arcuate head portion the outer circumference 13 of which is arcuate in contour, and adapted to receive the metal guard cap 14, which is of semi-spherical formation; the improved guard cap l i'preferably being disposed over the arcuate surface 13, and attached to the handle body 13 as by screw 15 detachably inserted into the extreme top of the body 13. The shank portion 16 of the wooden body 13 gradually tapers in converging manner toward the end of the handle opposite to the metal guard cap 14. A square or polygonal shaped passageway 17 is preferably provided axially through the wooden handle portion 13 within which the square or polygonal shaped upper end 19 of the pick element 11 is to be fixedly disposed, in any approved man- 'is centrally provided with the upstanding outwardly diverging attaching sleeve 26, which provides the tapered opening 27 therein. This guard member 12 is preferably stamped upon a punch-press, of a single piece of material, and is to be assembled over the shank end 16 of the handle construction 10, so that the extrme end of the shank portion 10 is snugly fixed within the tapered opening 27 of the tapered sleeve 26, against liability of movement of the guard 12 upon the handle 10. In this position the guard flange portion 25 of the member 12 extends laterally ahout'the entire circumference of thehandle at the juncture of the same with the pick element 11.
From the foregoing description of this invention it is apparent that an ice pick guard has been provided, which may be used in connection with picks of various kinds, for effectively protecting the fingers of a person engaged in splitting, cracking, or scraping ice. In lieu of the pick element 11 a scraper, or any analagous' ice engaging blade may be used. It is apparent that the cap 14 prevents liability of injury to the wooden body 13 of the handle construction 10, so that the same may not splinter, as is the case of ordinary ice pick handles of wood material.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from. the spirit of this invention or the scope of the claim.
I claim:
An ice pick comprising a handle formed of compressible material and having a downwardly tapered lower portion, a picking element embedded longitudinally in said handle and extending from the lower end thereof, and a guard including a disk havpered lower end portion of said handle with ing a central unobstructed opening formed a tight Wedging fit to mount the guard with therethro-ugh and of sufiicient size to rethe disk about the picking element at the 1 c'eive the lower end of the handle, and a lower end of the handle to compress the sleeve extending upward from the disk lower end portion of the handle and protect about the edge of the central opening and the handle from splittin g. flaring upwardly and fitting upon the ta- VICTOR KALINOVWS'KI.
