Description

Dec. 26, 1939. H. ANTONY 2,184,902

HAND PROTECTOR FOR KNIVES Filed May 2, 1959 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 26, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.

This invention relates to a hand protector for knives and has for an object to provide a hand protector which is easily attached to a knife handle to prevent the operators hand from slip- 6 ping onto the blade.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of a few strong simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture and hich will not easily 10 get out of order.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinaften fully described and claimed, it being understood 15 that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of 20 this specification,

Figure l is a side elevation of the hand protector applied to a knife.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Figure l.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device.

Figure 4-is a side elevation of a modified form of the device applied 'to a knife.

Figure 5 is a top plan view of the parts shown' in Figure 4. a 30 Figure 6 is a perspective view of the modified form of the device.

Referringnow to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, l comprises a body of an- 35 ular formation in side elevation. The body comprises a long'member H which extends across the blade l2 close to the front of the handle I 3, also a short member M which underlies and is located parallel to the lower edge of the handle 40 13. The long member ll of the body is provided with a longitudinal slot l which receives the blade l2 and the upper ends iii of the long member are bent and formed to provide prongs I! which are adapted to be-included in the upper 45 edge of the handle I3. A set screw I8 is screw threadedly engaged with the short member Id of the bodyand engages thelower edge of the handle I 3, and cooperates with the prongs to hold the hand protector against accidental move- 50 ment. A guard l9 curves downwardly and rearwardly from the rear end of the short member M of the body.

In the modified form of the device as shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6, 20 comprises a body of sub- 65 stantially elongated formation in side elevation.

The body comprises two long members 2I which extend over the sides of handle 22 near the front 'of the handle adjacent the base of the knife blade 23, and a shortmember 24 at the bottom which underlies and is located parallel to the lower edge 5 of the handle 22. The short member is provided with a set screw 25 which is screw threadedly engaged with the short member and engages the lower edge of the handle 22, and cooperates with the prongs 26 on the bent end portion 21 to hold the hand protector against accidental movement. The portions 21 are broken away at the center at an angle as shown by 28. A guard 29 curves downwardly and rearwardly from the rear end of the short member 24 or the body. v

In applying the hand-protector to the handle of the knife, it is'simply-necessary to slip the blade l2 through the longitudinal slot I 5, until the long member -I I abuts the front edgeof the handle. The short member M, which carries the set screw 3, then extends underneath the handle. The set screw is then tightened against the lower edge of the handle to embed the prongs in the upper edge of the handle to secure the device against accidental displacement. The guard I 9 then curves downwardly and rearwardly from the front edge of the handle and prevents the operators hand fromslipping forward upon the blade. In the modified form. of the device, the long members 2| arepassed along the sides of the blade 30 and disposed on opposite sides of the handle 22 near the base of the blade. Then the set screw 25 is tightened to embed the prongs 26in the upper edge of the handle.

From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.

What is claimed is:

1. A hand protector for knives comprising a 40 body member adapted to engage a knife handle adjacent to the blade, prongs on the upper end of the body, a set screw carried by the lower portion of the body adapted to engage the lower edge of the knife handle and embed said prongs in the upper edge of the knife handle, and a depending guard carried by said'body. n

2. A hand protector for knives comprising a,

'body of angular formation in side elevation, the

body comprising a long member adapted to extend across a knife blade close to the front of the knife handle, a short member extending from the long member adapted to underlie and extend parallel to the lower edge of the handle, the long member of the body being provided with a lonm from. the rear end of the short member of the body. a

3. A hand protector for knives comprising a body of substantially U-shape adapted to embrace the sides and bottom of the handle of the knife, the upper ends of the sides of the body being bent inwardly toward each other and provided with depending prongs, a set screw threadedly engaged through the bottom portion of the body and adapted to be advanced against the lower edge of the knife handle for embedding the prongs in the upper edge of the knife handle,

and a guard extending downwardly from the bot- 10 tom of the body.

HENRY ANTONY.
