PATENT FFICE.
HENRY G. VVEATHERILL, OF ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,860, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed October 1, 190A. Serial No. 226,842.
To aZZ whom it nutyconccrn:
Be it known that I, HENRY Gr. WEATHERILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to pipe attachments for monkeywrenches. It has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient means of securing the attachment to the shank of the wrench.
The invention consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench with my attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the device detached.
While the preferred embodiment of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the construction and operation thereof are described in the following specification, the right is reserved to make such changes from the constructions shown and described as the scope of the claims will permit.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the attachment consists of a beveled serrated piece or jaw 1 and a rebent spring 2, preferably secured to said jaw by a screw 3, passing through the portion 4 of said spring, which lies flat against the end of the jaw. From said portion 4 the arms of the spring extend substantially parallel to each other, but slightly curved from each other to give them a grip upon the shank of the wrench.
The arms are turned outward at their ends, as at 5, to guide the Wrench-shank between them as the device is applied.
It is necessary to make the spring separate from the other portion of the device, because each piece must be of a different temper from the other. It is obvious that the attachment may be made in different sizes to fit difierent sizes of wrenches. It has been found that with a good oil-tempered spring the device will be securely held in engagement with the wrench, and it is much more simple and easily applied and removed than devices of a similar nature now in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A pipe attachment for wrenches comprising a serrated jaw portion and a rebent spring secured to said jaw portion and having opposite extending arms adapted to engage the shank of a wrench.
2. A pipe attachment for wrenches comprising a serrated jaw portion and a rebent spring detachably secured to the end of said jaw portion and having opposite extending arms adapted to engage the shank of the wrench.
3. A pipe attachment for wrenches, comprising a serrated jaw portion and a rebent spring secured to said jaw portion and provided with opposite extending arms having their ends flared outward to facilitate the insertion of the shank of the wrench between said arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY Gr. VVEATHERILL.
