Screwsfor Fastening Stair Carpets.

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE..
MORITZ KRICKL, 0F NEr YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCREWS FOR FASTENING STAlR-CARPETS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,387, dated June 23, 1874; application filed June 3 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORITZ KRICKL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screws for Fastening Stair-Carpet, of which the following` is a specification:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l represents a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a face view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding` parts.
This invention consists in a screw, the shank of which is provided at one end with a wood screw-thread, while its other end is provided with a metal screwthread, and with a sharp point, the metal screw-thread being intended to receive an ornamental head, which abuts against a shoulder, with 'a square in such a manner that this head, when it is applied to the screw, offers a hold for a wrench, and the screw can be conveniently inserted into the riser of a step; and when said head is removed the carpet can be forced over the pointed end of the screw, where it will be retained by replacing the head.
If desired, a stair-rod may be placed between the carpet and the heads of the screws.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a screw, the shank of which is provided at one end with a wood 'screw-thread, a, while its opposite end torins a sharp point, b, and beneath this point is furnished with a nietal screwthread, c. This metal serewthread is intended to receive and retain a head, B, which is by .preference made ornamental, and provided with a square, d, to otter a good hold for a wrench. Then this head is secured on the metal screwthread c the screw A can be readily screwed into the riser C of 'a step; and when two or more screws have been secured in 'each riser of the stairs which are to be covered with a carpet the heads B of all said screws are removed, and the carpet is forced over the points b of the shanks, then the heads B are replaced, and the carpet is securely retained in position.
If desired, a stair-rod, D, may be placed between the carpet and the heads B on cach riser; but it will be readily seen that the carpet is retained solely by the shanks ot' the screws A.
These screws are of particu-lar advantage for fastening vstair-carpets which cover the entire surface ofthe stairs, and leave no space on their sides for securing fastenings for stairrods ot' the ordinary construction. l
In order to prevent the heads B from becoming fast on the metal screw-threads c l have 'provided shoulders c at the inner ends of these metal screwthreads, so that the heads will abut against these shoulders, and after the screws have been secured in the risers the heads can be readilv1 taken off.
When my screws are to be used in conjunction with stair-rods the heads B are provided with stems j', which extend through sockets in the stair-rods.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved screw for fastening stair-carpets, provided at one -end with a wood screwthread, a, and at its opposite end with a shoulder, c, and sharp point d, and with a metal serewthread, c, and combined therewith the head B, substantially in the nia-nner shown and described.
