Be it knownthat I, GEORGE W. COPELAND,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Ensley, inthe county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which l that are used by wall paper hangers.

As is well known to those versed in the art to which this invention appertains, it is customary for paper hangers to carry, in or with their kit, from eightto twelve dry brushes. Manifestly, these take up considerable room and are an encumbranoe, particularly when it is considered that -a paper hanger must usually also carry a ladder or trestles, and boards to be laid thereon.

With a knowledge of these conditions, it is the primary object of my invention to provide a dry brush for paper hangers, whereby the same handle or hand `grip may be used with a plurality v of brush heads, whereby the same grip may be used with all of the brushes and economy in space effected to a considerable degree. And the invention also aims to generally improve this class of devices and to render them more useful and commercially desirable.

W'ith these and other objects in View, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consist-s in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which,

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a brush handle of the ordinary type used with dry brushes, except, as herein specified, the sides ofthe brush being hollowed out or concave, as indicated at 2, whereby t-o provide a proper rest and grip vfor the operators thumb and fingers.

In t-he present embodiment of my invention, a channeled retaining plate 3 is connected in any1 desired way to the handle 1,

ysaid plate being designed to receive the brush head 4 which-is formed at its side edges with longitudinally extending grooves 5, whereby it maybe slipped by an endwise movement into the channeled plate 3 and be "retained therein in proper relation to the handle 1. Preferably, the head 4 is formed of some plastic substance in which the tufts or .bristles 6 are embedded, the bristles being preferably wired around longitudinally extending retaining wires 7 embedded in the plastic substance of the head.

In order to retain the head in place, the handle l is formed intermediate of its ends with a socket 8 in which a coiled expansion spring 9 is mountedsaid spring bearing against a transversely extending locking bar 10 which is adapted to be forced by the springV 8 into a depression formed in the fhead 4,l whereby the head will be securely held as against any accident-al longitudinal displacement. Preferably, the latch rod 10 is formed at one side of the handle 1 with an angularly disposed finger piece 11 and at its opposite end with a retaining lug 12. The handle 1 is formed with a transversely elongated recess 12a adapted to receive the latch l0 in the released position of the latter.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved brush will be apparent. When the brush head 4 is slipped by an endwise movement into the channeled 'plate 3, that is secured to the handle 1, the latch bar 10 will be forced by the spring 9 into the depression in the head when the latch bar registers with said depression, and consequently, all endwise movement of the brush head is prevented. In order to slip the head out of the channeled plate 3 and to replace it by another, as desired, it is only necessary to grasp the finger piece 11 and retract the latch bar 10 from the depression in the head 4, whereupon the head may be easily slipped out of place. It will thus be seen that I 'may use any desired number of heads with the same handle, whereby space is economized as well as weight, and wherei by also the same hand grip may be usedwith v Y proportions of 'the parts' without departing from the scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims,

What I claim is l. A brush of the character described, including a handle, a channeled plate secured to said handle, a brush head provided with bristles and adapted to be slipped by end-A wise movement into the channeled plate,the brush head being formed at one point with a depression, and a spring pressed latch bar carried by the handle and adapted to enter the depression in the head, whereby to 'prevent the' accidental longitudinal displacement of the latter.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a dry brush for use by wall paper hangers, including a handle, 'a channeled plate secured to the handle, a brush head provided with bristles and adapted to be slipped by an endwise movement into the channeled plate,
