5. I mn ME Attorneys l6 This invention relates to a block or jig to appreciably assist one in holding and handily polishing uniform insignia and more specifically provides a jig for positioning uniform insignia such as badges, buttons, belt buckles or the like for easy polishing of such insignia.

An object of this invention is to provide a polishing block for uniform insignia having sockets and, complemental grooves for receiving the fastening pins of the.

insignia thereby retaining the insignia in positionv while polishing. i

A further object of this invention is to provide a polishing block for uniform insignia which is constructed of a pair of pivotally attached elements having recesses in the adjacent sides thereof for forming a storage area for the polishing tools such as a polishing rag or the like.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide a polishing block for uniform insignia having finger gripping grooved side portions and recessed areas for reeeiving the uniform insignia of the upper and lower surfaces thereby providing an efiicient and eifective polishing block.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a polishing block for uniform insignia which is simple in construction, easy to use, convenient, well adapted for its purposes and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the polishing block of the present. invention with the grooved surface facing upwardly;

Figure 2is a perspective view of the polishing block with the belt buckle receiving recess facing upwardly;

Figure 3 is a transverse, vertical section taken substantially along the transverse center line of the polishing block of the present invention;

Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical section taken partially substantially along the longitudinal center line of the polishing block and showing the details of construction of one of the longitudinal grooves; and

Figure 5 is a transverse verticalsection taken substantially along section line 5-5 of Figure 4 showing the details of a modified form of polishing block.

Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral generally designates the polishing block of the present invention including a generally rectangular block of material 12 having concave recesses 14 in opposite side portions for facilitating the gripping of the polishing block 10 by the persons fingers. The upper surface of the block of material 12 is provided with a pair of transversely spaced longitudinal grooves 16 that are parallel to each other and spaced unequally from the longitudinal center line of the block 12. The grooves 16 extend partially through the block 12 and United States PatentO 2,733,473 ji atented Feb. 7, 1956 2 are of a depth to receive the fastening prongs 18 of a button 20 or other uniform insignia. Apair. of sockets 22 are spaced on each side of the center of the block 12 and are disposed equally from the center point of the block 12. The sockets 22 are substantially the same depth asthe grooves 16. Positioned at the center point of the block 12 is a bore or socket 24 extending completely through the block 12.

On the lower surface of the block 12 is a rectangular recess 26 disposed centrally of the surface and having oppositely disposed notches 28 inxthe vertical side walls of the recessed portion 26 for receiving a belt buckle and the sliding cam lock of the belt buckle. It will be seen that the long open ended socket 24 extends completely through the block 12 and is incommunication with the central area of the recessed portion 26.

As specifically shown in Figure 5, the block 12 may be constructed of upper and lower members 30 and.3 2 having abutting faces and adjoining edges hingedly con: nected together by a hinge member 34 and retained in overlying relation by a latch member 36 on the side of the block 12 opposite to the hinge 34. The central portion of the abutting surfaces of the upper member 30 and the lower member 32 are provided with recessed portions 38 which form a receptacle for polishing tools -such as a polishing rag or polish thereby facilitating the storage of these articles the uniform insignia.

In practical operation, the buttons 20 or the uniform insignia is placed with the fastening prongs 18 or the like in the sockets 22, grooves 16 or long socket 24 as desired thereby holding the uniform insignia in position while polishing. When necessary to polish a belt buckle, the recessed portion 26 is brought into the upper position wherein the belt buckle will be received in the recessed area 26. If the belt buckle is the type having a sliding cam, the vertical grooves 28 will receive the sliding cam thereby facilitating the positioning of the belt buckle preparatory for use in polishing in the recessed area 26. Obviously, the device may be I made of suitable wood, plastic, metal or the like and in a particular size to facilitate the easy storage and accessibility of the polishing block 10. It will be seen that the polishing block .of the present invention may be utilized for quick and eflicient polishing of the various uniform insignia thereby eliminating the usual tedious polishing operation.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A polishing jig for uniform insignia comprising a block having flat top and bottom surfaces, 21 pair of longitudinal grooves in one flat surface of said block, a plurality of selectively usable sockets in said one fiat surface, and a recessed portion in the opposite flat surface of said block, said grooves, sockets, and recess adapted to receive and position uniform insignia for polishing.

2. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said block is provided with concave side surfaces thereby providing finger gripping grooves.

3. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said block is provided with a centrally disposed bore and said sockets are longitudinally spaced on each side of said bore, said grooves being parallel and equally spaced from said bore.

4. The structure as defined in claim 1 wherein said recessed. portion is centrally disposedand-provided with a vertical groove in each--side wall-for receiving and positioning a belt buckle.
