To all whom it may concern: H
Be it known that I, HARRY H. NORRIS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at North Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotter- Pin Pullers, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cotter pin pullers and more particularly to a tool or implement especially designed and adapted for use in extracting cotter pins.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a cotter pin puller of this character which may be readily adjusted so that the tool may engage any adjacent part of the mechanism to which the cotter pin is attached in order that a leverage may be obtained for exerting a forcible tug or pull on the cotter pin whereby it may be withdrawn from position without being materially damaged.
The invention further aims to provide an implement of this character which will be extremely simple in construction, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Theabove and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment and in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing its application to a cotter p Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. 7

Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my inven tion, in which like characters of reference indicate like corresponding parts through out the several views, the shank 1 of the implement has one end screw threaded as indicated at 2 for a considerable distance throughout the length of the shank. The opposite end of the shank forms a handle 3 which may be grasped by the user.
The cotter pin engaging member is adjustably mounted upon the screw threaded end 2 and comprises a nut 4 substantially elliptical in cross section as indicated in Fig. 3. nally adjusted on the shank. The elongated portion, formed by the elliptical construction of the nut, provides an offset end 6 which has a relatively small opening 7 parallel to the screw threaded opening 5. The cotter pin engaging finger or hook 8 is mounted in this opening 7 and comprises the straight end 9 adapted to firmly fit the opening 7' and the hooked or curved end 10 which is substantially semi-circular in formation and which is tapered to provide the pointed end 11 to facilitate passage through the eye of the cotter pin. The end 11 is extended downwardly as shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2 to a point considerably below the lower end of the head or nut 4.
At the terminal of the screw threaded portion of the shank is a restricted projection 12 which forms a fulcrum for the tool when it is in use.
As shown to advantage in Fig. 1, when the implement is in use, the fulcrum member 12 will be engaged with a convenient part of the mechanism which has the cotter pin secured therein. The end of the hook 10 will be passed through the eye of the cotter pin so that a grip will be obtained thereon and the hook is preferably passed through the eye of the cotter pin from the inside thereof if possible. When this is done an upward pull may be exerted on the handle 3 as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, the member 12 acting as a fulcrum for the tool whereby a pull is exerted on the cotter pin by the hook member 10. By virtue of its curved construction, the hook member 10 will follow through the eye of the cotter pin as it is being withdrawn and the latter will have a considerable force exerted on the pull against its position in the member in which it is received so that it will be withdrawn from position. Obviously the shank of the implement may be of any desired length in order that the desired leverage may be obtained for easily extracting the cotter pin.
The nut 4 is easily adjustable longitudinally on the screw threaded shank in order that the implement may be used for cotter pins in the many and varied positions in panying drawings have reference to what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I deslre it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, din1ensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my inventi'on what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1'. A cotter pin extractor comprising a straightshank having a screw threaded portion, and an adjustable member mounted 011 the screw threaded portion and carrying a curved hook having a pointed end.
2. A cotter pin extractor comprising an elongated straight shank having a screw threaded portion, an adjustable nut mounted on the screw threaded portion and equipped with an offset end having a curved hook attached thereto, the said hook being tapered and provided with a pointed end.
3. A tool comprising an elongated shank having a screw threaded portion at one end, the terminal of the screw threaded portion being provided with an extension forming a In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
