Description
Patented Aug. 19, 1924.
- PIPE WRENCH; 8
Application filed Augusti23, 1923. Serial No. 658,859.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ARCHIE M. MoOoRn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a wrench for pipes wherein the swinging jaw member is automatically adjusted whereby the wrench may be accommodatedto various sizes without adjusting the jaw by hand as is now the case with pipe wrenches with which I am familiar.
The primary object of'my invention resides in the provisionof such an automatically adjustable pipe wrench that, is extremely simple of construction and one that may be manufactured and marketed at relatively small cost, the tool comprising but a few parts and these co-related in such a manner as to reduce the possibility of disarrangement to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention is betterum derstood, the same comprises the novel form,
combination and arrangement of partsset forth in the following specification, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. In the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both the views,
Figure 1 is an elevational view partly in section of my improved wrench, and" Figure 2 is an elevational view of the swinging jaw member per se.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, my novel wrench embodies a bandle 5 of desirable length rounded at its lower end at 6 and formed at its upper end with inclined gripping teeth 7. This handle 5 is formed at its upper end at a pointdirectly beneath said teeth 7 and at opposite'sides thereof with eccentric recesses 8 that open at one side of the wrench, this handlebeing formed at a point directly beneath these recesses and at the side wherein said recesses open with a vertically extending enlargement 9 which enlargement is formed with a vertical pocket 10 that opens at its upper end as clearly shown in Figure 1.
Positioned within the said recesses 8 and freely movable therein are the curved legs 11 of the lower end of a swinging jaw 12,
mu STATES. PATENT (Omar- 1 I these legs being provided by slotting said jaw as shown in both of the figures. These legs 7, 11 are pivoted within said recesses through themedium of a pivot pin 13. This jaw 12 is of curvilinear form as shown and is formed upon its inner side from the outer edge thereof to the point wherein said legs 11 begin with teeth let that are inclined in a direction opposite the inclination of the teeth 7 of said handle 5. I j
Loosely pivotally secured to the swinging jaw 12 between said legs 11 through-the mediumtof a pin 15 is the laterally extending head 16 upon the upper end of a pendant pin 17,. thishea'd being provided with an elongated slot for permitting of the passage of said connecting pin whereby the same is allowed to slide therein for obvious pur-- poses. Said pendant pin 17 extends downwardly within the pocket 10 and is normally forced upwardly thereinflthrough the me- ,dium of an expansion, helical spring 18 it being obvious that said spring 18 forces up wardly upon the pin 10 for consequently swinging the aw 12 toa closed position and in actual practice whenever it is desired to engage apipe the projecting end of the jaw 12 is positioned thereover and the handle 5 pulled downwardly whereby the pipe may be fed between the toothed end of said handle 5 and the toothed side of said jaw 12 in a manner as shown in Figure 1.
It. will be obvious that in view of the foregoing when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing that a wrench of this character may be employed with pipes of varying sizesand fits in such a manner as not to require any manual adjustment of the aw 12.
Minor changes, may be made within the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to'secure by LettersPatent is j A pipe wrench comprising a handle pro-j vided at its outer end with a rigid aw, inward and on opposite sides of which are recesses, a substantially arcuate movable jaw having its inner end bifurcated, the furcations being received in said recessesand pivotally connected to said handle, said handlebeing provided on one longitudinal edgeadjacent said jaws with a socket opening toward the latter, an expansion spring located said movable jaw, and pivot pins passing in said socket a pin slidably mounted in the through the furcations and the slots in said socket and projectable beyond the outer end head, whereby to provide loose pivotal 0 thereof, said pin being provided on its outer connection between the pin and movable j aw. end With a laterally disposed head, provided In testimony whereof I afix my signature. with an elongated slot, said slotted head being disposed in the furcations of the afore- ARCHIE M. MoCORD.
