JOHN K. CHAMP, OF PARIS, KENTUCKY.
' PLIERS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN K. CHAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches, and one of the principal objects thereof is the provision of means whereby the jaw handles of a wrench may, within certain limitations, be held in contiguous relation, irrespective of the distance apart of the jaws.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of the class described which will be simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the figures, of which,
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a wrench constructed according to my invention, the jaws being shown in a closed position, and, Fig. 2 represents aview similar to Fig. 1, the jaws being shown in an open position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the jaws 5 and 6, are formed on the base portion, with the. disks 7 pivoted together as at 8, and jaw 5, beyond disk 7 is extended into a handle 9, and jaw 6 beyond its disk is formed into a toothed segment 10 on which is pivoted as at 11 the inner end of the jaw handle 12, said handle being bifurcated at its inner ends to form ears 13 which lie on opposite sides of segments 10, and the inner end of the handle 12 is enlarged and recessed between the ears 13 as at 1 1, for receiving the spring-actuated latch on detent 15, which is provided with a pin 16 extending through slots 17 formed in the walls of the recess 14. The outer edge of the segment 10 is provided with teeth 18 which are straight on their upper edges as at 19 and are curved on their lower edges as at 20, and detent 15 at its Specification of Letters Patent.
' outer endis rounded as at swung in the opposite Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
Application filed November 13, 1913. Serial No. 800,877.
21 to co-act with the rounded portions 20 of the teeth in allowing the detent to ride over the teeth when handle 12 is swung away from handle 9, but it is evident that when handle 12, is direction or toward handle 9, the detent will engage the flat sarface of the teeth and thereby lock jaw 6 with handle 12. Jaws 5 and 6 are provided with concave sets of teeth 22 for engaging nuts, pipes or other articles, and the outer ends of the jaws are extending as at 23, and flattened so that the wrench may be used as a pair of pliers, and the disks 7 are provided with the usual recesses 24 for cutting wire.
It will be understood that the tension of the spring 25 which is positioned between detent 15 and the bottom of the recess 14, normally holds the detent outwardly, and so when it is desired to swing handle 12 on its pivot 11 toward handle 9, the detent must be pulled rearwardly by means of pin 16 for disengaging the detent from the teeth 18.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the jaws may be separated some distance to grasp an object, yet, the jaw handles are in contiguous relation so that they may be grasped by one hand of the operator so that his other hand may be free.
Although, I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I reserve and may exercise the right to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described a pair of jaws, having a pivoted movement upon each other, a handle formed integrally with one of said jaws, a flattened extension formed integrally with the other of said jaws, second handle pivoted to said flattened extension, teeth formed on the free end of said flattened extension, said teeth being correspondingly rounded on similar sides, a recess contained in said second handle, a plunger slidably mounted in said recess, and having a rounded portion adapted to co-act with said rounded portions of said teeth, to permit of a pivotal movement of said second handle sid M d-1e? a plunger sliislably momted in "said ieupon said flattened eXt-ensiba'ia bi e'direction, and resilient means whereby said 'slidable plunger is normallyhe'ldfin efigafie ment with said teeth.
5 2. In a device of the character describef'dl a pair-0f, jaws, having aspivoted movement -"fipen "each"'ii therfwhandle formed integrally with one of said fja-iii' sf a flatfend em tension formed integrally with the ether edito said afidhai ing a rounded portion adapted act with said second handle upon said ned" extension in one direction, and manually operable means carried by said lj'olunger, whereby. it maybe withdrawn 2G frornengagement with said teeth -against thtensien of said resilient means.
ii-natestnneny' whereof I have slgned my name to this specification in two subscrlblngwitnesses.
