UNITED STATES WILLIAM HENRY GOLDSTRAW, 0F COBDEN, AUSTRALIA.
ADJUSTABLE PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed August 25, 1927, Serial No. 215,451, and in Australia September 18, 1926. Renewed July 13, 1929.
This invention relates to an improved adjustable pipe wrench of simple construction, which in use will be found to be highly efficient in rotating and coupling together lengths of screwed piping, circular section rods and like workpieces.
The improved wrench consists essentially of a lever handle, a stationary jaw pivotally connected to said lever handle, and a movable jaw pivotally supported from the stationary jaw and so connected to the lever handle that it is tightened upon the pipe or workpiece to be rotated when said lever handle is actuated. Adjustment means are provided in the tool for regulating the distance between the gripping faces of the jaws to suit pipes or rods of different diameters.
In the accompanying exemplary drawings Figure 1 is a View in elevation of the improved pipe wrench.
Figure 2 is a sectional view illustrating the action of the wrench.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view on line AA of Figure 1.
The improved pipe wrench comprises a lever handle 2 slotted at its upper end 3 for pivotal connection to a bar 4 by means of a pin 5. Supported on said bar t is a stationary jaw 6 provided at one end with a removable pivot pin or screws 7 passed through one of a series of adjustment holes 8 formed in said bar 4. The outer end of the stationary jaw 6 is pivoted to a second bar 9 which also has a series of adjustment holes 10.
A movable jaw 11 is mounted beneath the stationary jaw 6, and it is formed at its inner end with a slot 12 whereby it is adapted to slide freely on the bar 4. The outer end of said movable jaw is pivotally connected to the bar 9 by a removable pin or screw 13 passed through one of the said adjustment holes 10. Provided on the lower portion of the movable jaw 11 is a lug 14 which projects into a slotted extension 15 on the upper'end of the lever handle and is pivotally connected thereto by a pin or rivet 16.
In use, the jaws of the wrench are first adjusted approximately to the size of the pipe, rod or other member 17 required to be turned by inserting the removable screws or pins 7 and 13 into selected adjustment holes in the bars 4 and 9. The wrench being ap plied to the pipe or member 17, the lever handle 2 is grasped and actuated similarly to the action with an ordinary wrench. In the initial movement of the wrench, the lever handle pivotally moves on the pin 5 thus causing the movable jaw 11 to be pivotally moved upwardly on the pin 13 into engagement with the pipe or member 17. Further operation of the lever handle now causes the jaws 6 and 11 to automatically adjust themselves on' the pipe or member 17, thereby firmly gripping and rotating it in required manner.
Upon relaxing the pressure on the lever handle 2, the jaws 6 and 11 are automatically released from gripping engagement with the pipe or member 17.
The inner faces of the which are preferably V-shaped as shown in the drawings, may be serrated as at 18 to enable a very firm grip to be obtained on the pipe or other workpiece to be turned.
What I do claim is 1. An improved adjustable pipe wrench, comprising a lever handle, a bar pivotally connected to the said lever handle, a jaw pivotally connected to the bar at one end, a second bar pivotally connected at the other end of the said jaw, and a movable jaw pivotally connected to the said second bar, the said movable jaw being adapted to slide on jaws 6 and 11,
the first mentioned bar, and means connecting the movable jaw with the said handle.
2. An improved adjustable pipe wrench, comprising a lever handle, a bar pivotally connected to the said lever handle, an upper jaw pivotally connected at one end to the said -bar, a second bar pivotally connected to the said jaw at the other end, a movable jaw pivotally connected to the said second bar, means to secure the pivotal points of said jaws in one of several positions, whereby the distance between the jaws is varied, the said movable jaw being adapted to slide on the first mentioned bar, and means connecting the movable jaw with the said handle.
3. An improvedadjustable pipe wrench, comprising a lever handle, a bar having a series of holes therein pivotally connected to the said lever handle, an upper jaw adapted to be pivotally connected atone end to the bar, a pin used with the said jaw adapted to fit any one of the several holes in the bar and form the pivot pin for said jaw, a second bar having a series of holes, the said bar 5 being pivotally connected to the free end of the jaw, a lower aw adjustably mounted "for pivotal movement in the said second bar,
whereby the distance between the upper and lower jaws may be controlled within the limits of the holes in the bars, and means 10 connecting the movable jaw with the said handle.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
