PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to wrenches of the char acter which may obtain a firm grip on an object,
such as pipes and other cylindrical devices, not provided with wrench engaging faces for the accommodation of a conventional type of wrench, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which is 1 extremely easy and simple to adjust to an object and may be brought into full gripping position similar to the operation of conventionally constructed pliers and will retain said gripping position until manually released.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts a to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention;
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation illustrating a wrench constructed in accordance with my inventon.
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the wrench.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view illustrating the wrench.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line the serrated work engaging face is formed is arranged laterally of the handle 6 and is in the form of a relatively movable jaw including an apertured extension Ill to which one end of a turn buckle II is pivoted, as shown at I2. The other end of the turn buckle is pivotally connected to an ear l3 formed on the handle 6 substantially intermediate the ends of the latter. Laterally of the relatively movable jaw the plate 8 is provided with'a screw threaded opening to receive aheaded bolt l4 after extending through a slot 15 formed in a plate or shank l6, oneendof which is integrally connected with one end of the handle 6. The shank I6 where the latter forms onto the handle 6 presents a shoulder l8 to abut alike shoulder I9 on the handle 5 where the latter forms onto the extension of the plate 8 for the purpose of limiting the movement of the handles toward each other.
i The bolt I4 extending through the slot in the shank l 6 pivotally mounts the shank on the plate 8 as well as slidably connecting the shank to said plate 8. The shank [6 has integrally therewith a relatively fixed jaw 2|] having a serrated work engaging face opposed to the serrated work engaging face 9 of the relatively fixed jaw.
The turn buckle I l is in the form of a sleeve 2| having internal right and left hand screw threads to mesh with right and left hand screw threads of rods 22, one of which is pivoted to the extension ll) of the plate 8 and the other is pivoted on the ear l3 of the handle 6. j
In use, the turn buckle II is operated to adjust the jaws relative to each other to accommodate therebetween an object with the handles 5 and 6 swung away from each other. With the jaws adjusted to the object, the handles 5 and 6 are squeezed together and in so doing the relatively movable jaw is forced in the direction of the stationary jaw due to the arrangement of the turn buckle between the handle 5 and the plate 8 and as the relatively movable jaw assumes a full gripping position, asshown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the pivot l2 of the turn buckle passes a dead center position with respect to the other pivot of said turn buckle which maintains the jaws in full gripping position on the object obviating the necessity of the operator exerting a full gripping action on the handles 5 and 6 in the direction of each other, thereby only requiring the handles to be gripped sufiiciently for the turning or rotating of the object by thewrench. A simple separation of the handles 5 and 6 brings about the disengagement, of the relatively movable jaw from the object, consequently permitting the wrench to be easily removed from said object.
It is believedthat the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawing will fully set forth the construction and advantages of this invention to those skilled in the art to which such device relates, so that further detailed description will not be required.
Having thus described my invention. what I.
claim is: t 1. A wrench comprising a plate-like portion including a relatively movable jaw and an extensionopposite thereto, said jaw and extension and slidable movementon the plate-like portion l in substantial alignment with the jaws.
2. A wrench comprising a plate-like portion including a relatively movable jaw and an extension opposite thereto, a shank pivotally and slidably connected to the plate-like portion and including a relatively fixed jaw arranged opposite to the relatively movable jaw, arcuately curved handles integral with the plate-like portion and the shank and including abutments for limiting the pivotal movement of the handles toward each other, an ear formed on one of said handles, and
a turn buckle having a pivot connection with the ear and a pivot connection with the extension whereby on the jaws assuming gripping position on an object the second-named pivot connection will move past the first-named pivot connection 1 in a direction away from the shank to retain the jaws in gripping position.
