Description
B; Z-ANTO.
WRENCH, v APPLICATION FILED MAB-.29. 1907- A TTORNE Y5 PATBNTED JUNE is, 1907.
EMIL H. ZA NTO, OF DARTFORD, WISCONSIN.
WRENCH.'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed March 29, 1907. Serial No. 365,344.
To all whom it may concern: &
.Be it known that I, EMIL H. ZANTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dartford, in the county of Green Lake and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe wrenches and its object is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character which can be readily applied to a pipe or other similar object to be rotated and which is formed with means whereby the pressure of the jaws upon the object will be increased in proportion to the pressure exerted upon the handle of the wrench in one direction.
Another object is to provide a wrench formed of few parts and which does not utilize screws or similar means for effecting an adjustment thereof.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims. 1
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench, the jaws being shown open; andFig. 2 is an elevation of the wrench, the same being shown with its jaws gripping an object therebetween.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 is a shank having a forked end 2 in which is pivotally mounted an actuating link 3 having a laterally extending stop 4 adjacent the free end thereof. Connecting links 5 are pivoted to the shank 1 at points removed from the forked end 2- and fulcrumed between these links is the main jaw 6 of the wrench. This jaw has a slot 7 therein through which the actuating link extends and when the wrench is not in use the stop 4 1 designed to prevent the link 3 from being withdrawn from the jaw. Said stop also holds the jaw supported. An ear 8 is formed at the free end of jaw 6 and is pivotally mounted within the forked end 9 of a secondary jaw 10. A slot 11 extends into the free end of this jaw 10 and is designed to receive the link 3 so that the jaw 10 can be supported by the stop 4. The adjoining faces of the two jaws are toothed as shown at 12 and that face of the jaw 10 contacted by the stop 4 is preferably concaved as shown at 13 so as to hold the stop 4 properly centered during the gripping action.
1n usingthe wrench the same is first opened as shown in Fig. 1 after which a pipe or other object such as shown at 14 is placed between the jaws and link 3 drawn downward and inserted into slot 11 with its stop 4 in the concave 3. The weight of the shank 1 will tend to bind the two jaws upon opposite portions of the object 14 and this pressure can be increased by pushing the free end of shank 1 in one direction so that said shank will pull upon the link 3 and push against the links 5. The object 14 can be readily released either by reversing the movement of the shank and withdrawing the object longitudinally from between the jaws, or by swinging the link 3 out of engagement with the jaw 10 whereupon said jaw will swing open as shown in Fig. 1.
What is claimed is:
1. In a wrench the combination with a shank; of a jaw, a link connection between the jaw and an intermediate portion of the shank, and a combined supporting and actuating link movably connected to one end portion of the shank, and a secondary jaw movably connected to one end of the first mentionedjaw and having a slotted portion dispoeed to receive and engage the supporting lin a.
2. In a wrench the combination with a shank; of a jaw movably connected thereto, a combined supporting and actuating link movably connected to the shank and extending through the jaw, a secondary jaw movably connected to the first mentioned jaw and having a slotted portion disposed to receive the link, said secondary jaw having a concaved seat for the link.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EMIL H. ZANTO.
Witnesses:
I. M. CHAPEL,
W. H. WATERS.
