Description

HAROLD W. MURRAY, 0E GENTELBJEAGH, NEW YOfiK.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1917.
Application filed October 5, 1916. Serial No. 123,999.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD W lilURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centereach, Long Island, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. a
The invention relates to a wrench and more particularly to the class of internal expansion wrenches.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character wherein the gripping jaws thereof can be expanded for fitting engagement in different sized pipes so that the same can be readily turned in the execution of work, although the wrench can be used for engagement in any other part to be operated upon.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form to assure positive and secure gripping internally of a part to be turned.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character wherein the construction thereof permits the gripping of a part internally thereof so as to avoid the marring or damaging of the outer or exposed surface thereof and said part can be readily turned with despatch without possibility of the slipping of the wrench or the working loose of the same.
A still further object of the invention is the Provision of a wrench of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, readily and easily adjusted, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional. view through the jaws of the wrench.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the wrench showing the jaws partially open.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail the wrench comprises a stem or shank 5 carrying at one end a handle 6 while formed at the opposite end is a head 7 provided with a squared eye 8 for the reception of the end 9 (correspondingly shaped thereto) of an expander in the form of a fiat wing or blade 10 which when mounted in the head 7 is at right angles to the stem or shank 5 for a purpose presently described.
Arranged for engagement with the expander are gripping jaws each comprising a semi-circular or segmental shaped member 11 which at its peripheral edge is formed with a series of teeth 12, the members 11 being swingingly connected to each other through the medium of a hinge or pivot connection 13 located at the peripheral edges thereof while the meeting edges 1 1 of said members 11 are provided with seats 15 for forming countersinks for accommodating the blade or wing 10 constituting the expander or spreader for the members.
Mounted centrally in the free outer end of the blade or wing 10 is a screw 16 which carries a guide washer 17 contacting with the outer faces of the members 11 so as to hold the same against relative displacement longitudinally of the expander which. is confined within the seats 15 when the members 11 are in closed position and on the turning of the stem or shank 5 the wing or blade 10 is acted upon to turn the same in the seats 15 thereby spreading the members 11 for the opening thereof with respect to each other so that the said members will engage the wall of a circular opening orthe internal surface of a pipe or other part to be operated upon for the rotation thereof. The more pressure applied to the handle end 6 of the stem or shank 5 increases the spreading of the jaw members 11 and thereby enables a firm grip of the same upon a part interiorly thereof for the turning thereof.
It will be apparent that the jaw members 11 can be readily removed from the expander so that different sizes of jaw members can be effectively used according to the character of the work to be operated upon.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the wrench will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
lVhat is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, in combination, a pair of similar sector shaped jaws having an opposed arcnate series of longitudinal teeth, a sleeve carried by one of said aws substantially flush with its fiat face, a Vertical pintle carried by the opposite jaw and projecting therefrom, said sleeve being pivotally mounted upon said pintle so as to hingedly connect the two jaws, said jaws being provided upon their fiat sides with similarly shaped curved recesses forming a slot when said flat sides contact, an operating member shaped to snugly fit said slot, said operating member having a transversely reduced but thickened polygonal portion, a handle having a polygonal bore in which the polygonal portion of said operating member is received, plates engaging said handle and polygonal portion of said member and the bottom of said jaws, and movable fasteners engaging said plates and carried by said operating member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HAROLD lV. MURRAY.
