Be it known'that we, GEORGE J. JoNiis and EDWIN (l. BLANNI'NG, citizens o'l` the United States of America, residing at `New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and use- .tul Improvements in Friction Vifrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object ot' the invention is to provide a device ot the kind indicated in which the nutsengaging head is frictionally engaged by the holder during the turiiing ot the head in operation, as in unscrewing or screwing up a nut, or rotating a shattor spindle, thus accomplishing all the advantages of the con ventional ratchet wrench without the disadvantages inherent in the latter, such as the pawls breaking or failing to take hold.
W ith this object in view, the invention consists in the construction and combination ol parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the acconipanying drawings, wherein:

The nut-engaging head l, which is circular, provided with a peripheral V-shaped rib 2 troni which the corner edge is removed to leave a llat surface 3. The head is pro-v vided with a polygonal opening l constitutu ing a nutl seat and the head is adapted to be carried'by and operated by a holder having jaw members 5 andG pivotally connected, as by a hinge pin?, the jaw members interiorly being grooved for the reception ot the peripheral rib 2, the groove cross sectionally corresponding to the cro'sssectional conto-ur of the rib with the exception that the converging side of the groove merges into a common line to leave a. clearance space between the fiat 3 and the extreme bottom of the groove.
The jaws 5 and 6 are semi-circular in plan and to thelatter there ispivotally connected the lever S as by arhinge pin 9 and this lever has connected with its shank l0 the handle .11. The vjaw 5 is provided with a radial arm l2 to which are connected, by means of the pivot pins 141-, the links l5, the latter being disposed on opposite sides ot' the arm l2 so as to engage the lever 8 on opposite sides with which they are connected by means of a pin 16.
Qbviously, pivotal movement of the lever 8 on the pin 9 in one direction will tend to separate the jaws 5 and G, thus precluding frictional gripping action on the nut head, whereas movement in the other direction will tend to bring the jaws together into firm gripping engagen'ient with the nut head. Thus, oscillation ol the device will first et'- fect gripping action on the nut head, then release it from the nut head and then again grip it and so on, so that an intermittent rotary movement in one direction is communicated to the nut head by the oscillation of the handle ll and the nut may be screwed oil or screwed on, depending on the manner in which the device is attached. i
The rib 2 being V-shaped in cross-section and engaging corresponding grooves in the jaws, it may be inverted should certain conditions require a nut head having its opposite 'faces formed differently. However, in the present disclosure, no inversion of the nut head is necessary. The device as a whole may be inverted when it is desired to screw a nut up, ijf the previous disposition oi the device is such as to etl'ect au unscrewing operation. i
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
A friction wrench comprising a nut or bolt turning head, hingedly connected jaws disposed in surrounding relation to said head, and a manual oscillatory element having a pivotal connectionwith one jaw and a link connection with the other jaw, the head being provided with a peripheral rib tranS- versely triangular, and the jaws being formed with a correspondingly shaped groove for the reception ot' said rib.
