WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 748,671, dated January 5, 1904.
' Application filed April 18. 1903. $erialNo.153,246. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED LEE VINYARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slidell, in the parish of St. Tammany and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and has for its object to provide a strong and durable tool of this kind having simple and efficient means for adjusting the aws.
With this and other objects in view the invention comprises an arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation with the sliding jaw adjusted and set. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section showing the sliding jaw released.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 4: indicates the handle, having at its upper end a fixed jaw 5. The sliding jaw is indicated at 6 and has a shank 7, which is contained in the handle 4, passing through a slot 8 in the jaw 5 and into a socket 9 in the lower end of the handle. The handle is open, as at 1O,'f0r a portion of its length, and along one of the inner edges ratchet-teeth 11 are formed. The shank 7 has ratchet-teeth 12 adapted to engage the teeth 1-1. A set-screw 13, passing through the handle, engages the shank 7. When the set-screw is loose, the shank may slide freely up or down in the handle. When it is in the position desired, the screw is tightened down, which interlocks the teeth 11 and 12 and securely holds the shank and its jaw in position. By this construction a quick adjustment is obtained, and the wrench is strong and durable, having no complicated parts to get out of order. 7
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by 50 Letters Patent, is-- A wrench comprising a recessed handle having a fixed jaw at one end and a socket at the opposite end, a jaw having a shank extending into and slidable in the socket, ratchetteeth on one edge of the recess and on the shank, and a set-screw for interlocking said ratchet-teeth, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED LEE VINYARD.
