IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCH ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,697, dated April 22, 1879; application filed August 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'I, PETER PEPPLER, of Salem, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrench Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompa nyin g drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to pipe-wrench attachments for monkey-wrenches, and is designed to provide such a construction of the same that while they can be readily applied to and removed from the shank of a wrench, they may also be secure and firm in their fastening to the latter, and without liability of having their fastening devices lost or displaced.
The invention consists in adapting the cappiece of a pipe-wrench attachment to have detachable sliding-groove engagement with the shank-embracing arms of a monkey-wrench, and in providing the same with a fastening device which works in a screwythreaded opening formed in said cap-piece, and which has end bearing against the wrench-shank. By
"these means the cap-piece is bodily removed from the attachment, or is connected therewith, by sliding it in a straight line of direction, respectively, to or from its operative position in the same.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents an ordinary monkey-wrench provided with the invention. Fig. 2 is a view, in crosssection, of the same.
The attachment A may be secured to any kind of monkey-wrench, and may be formed with a serrated working-face of any desired character, that shown in the drawings, however, being a form which I prefer. It is provided with shank-embracing arms B, the free extremities of which are formed with grooves b, in which the tongues c of the removable cap-piece C have respective sliding engagement.
Instead of the special form of tongue-andgroove engagement herein shown, the reverse of the same may obtain; andin such instance the cap-piece would be provided with grooves, and the inner sides of said arms would have tongues to fit therein. So, too, it is evident that the cap-piece might be formed of one and the same thickness through all parts of its body, the end edges of which latter would in such case engage with corresponding grooves in the sides of the shank-embracing arms, so that there would be simply a sliding-groove engagement of the cap-piece with said arms.
A screw-threaded opening, d, is made in the central sectional body of said cap-piece, in which a thumb-screw, D, of any suitable form works. Said thumbsorew is adapted to have ancnd bearing against the shank E of the monkey-wrench, and by its adjustment to or from the same the attachment is clamped to or loosened in engagement from said shank.
When the thumb-screw is loosened the cappiece is readily removed, the attachment is disconnected entirelyfromthe monkey-wrench, and the latter can be used in its ordinary manner.
Instead of employing a thumb-screw as a fastening means, I may substitute any other kind of clamping device which is adapted to work in a screw-threaded opening formed in the cap-piece, and to have an end bearin g against the wrench shank. Thus a device formed with a nut-head might be used; or one having a transverse hole in its head or upper extremity adapted to receive a lever or wrenchbar could be used.
It is also evident that the attachment can be applied to the wrenchshank at any desired point thereon, either in close proximity to the rigid or to the sliding jaw, or at a distance from both the same.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a pipe-Wrench attachment for monkeywrenches, the combination, with a cap-piece having sliding-groove engagement with the shank-embracing arms, of a clamping device which works in a screw threaded opening formed in said cap-piece, and is adapted to have end'bearing against the wrench-shank, substantially as set forth.
