Description

N0. 608,628. Patented Aug. 9, I898.
0. WIGTIL.
WRENCH.
(Application filed Mar. 28, 1898.)
(No Model.)
WITNESSES [NVENTOR Smarties a'rnnr omen,
OLE W'IGTIL, OF CANBY, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,628, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed March 28, 1898. Serial No. 675,442. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that I, OLE WIGTIL, a resident of Oanby, in the county of Yellow Medicine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means whereby to permit the ready and quick adjustment of the movable jaw and hold the same firmly locked in position when adjusted.
A further object is to produce a combined nut and pipe wrench which shall be simple in construction, easy to manipulate and adjust, and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafterset forth, and pointed out in the claims. A
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail view.
A represents the shank of the wrench, adapted at one end for the reception of a wooden or other handle and provided at the other end with a head 1, projecting laterally in both directions from the shank and forming two fixed jaws 2 3, the jaw 2 being made plain or straight and adapted to cooperate with a similarly-shaped movable jaw 4 to form a nut-wrench and the jaw 3 being made with a serrated face to cooperate with a serrated movable jaw 5 to form a pipe wrench. The movable jaws A and 5 project from and are made integral with a yoke 6, adj ustably mounted on the shank A, said yoke being provided internally with ratchet-teeth 8 to mesh with similar ratchet-teeth 9 on one side of the shank A. The diameter of the opening through the yoke is sufficiently larger than the diameter of the shank A to permit the teeth in the yoke to be moved out of mesh with the teeth on the shank when the movable jaws are to be adjusted. The yoke is provided with a hole 10, which serves as a bearing for the shank 11 of a button or thumb-piece 12. A
cross-head 13 is secured to the inner end of the shank 11 and is adapted to be normally disposed between the shank and the plain inner wall of the yoke, whereby to retain the yoke normally in such position as to insure the engagement of the teeth on the yoke with the teeth 011 the shank, and thus the adjustable jaws will be held firmly locked when the wrench is in use. The inner wall of the yoke, adjacent to the cross-head 13, is made witha recess 14, of a size and shape to receive said cross-head when the latter is turned to a position at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1, and thus permit the yoke to be moved laterally to a sufficient extent to insure the disengagement of the ratchet-teeth when the jaws are to be adjusted. In order to assist the withdrawal of the crosshead into the recess 14 and to retain it in such position while the yoke is being moved to adjust the movable jaws, a spring 15 is employed. This spring is inserted into a socket in the shank 11 of button 12 and is adapted to bear against the shank A of the wrencl V My improvements are simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without de parting from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench, the combination with a shank and a fixed jaw thereon, of a yoke mounted on the shank and having a jaw, the relative diameters of the shank and the opening through the yoke being such as to permit a lateral movement of the yoke on the shank, a cross-head adapted to be disposed between the shank of the wrench and the inner wall of the .yoke, a shank on said cross-head and provided at its free end with a button or thumb-piece whereby to permit the cross-head to be turned and enter a recess in the yoke, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a shank having ratchet-tooth on one side and a fixed jaw on said shank, of a yoke having a jaw and mounted on the shank and provided internally with ratchet-teeth to engage the ratchet-teeth on the shank, a cross-head adapted to be disposed between the shank and the inner wall of the yoke whereby to retain the ratchet-teeth in mesh, said inner wall of the yoke being made with a recess to receive said cross -head when the latter is turned, whereby to permit the disengagement of the ratchet-teeth, and a button or thumbpiece connected with said cross-head whereby to turn it, substantially as set forth.
3. In a wrench, the combination with a shank having ratchet-teeth on one side and a fixed jaw on said shank, of a yoke mounted on said shank and provided with ratchetteeth to engage the ratchet-teeth on the shank, a jaw on said yoke, the relative diameters of the shank and the opening through the yoke being such as to permit the disengagement of the ratchet-teeth, a cross-head adapted to be disposed between the shank and the inner wall of the yoke whereby to maintain the ratchet-teeth normally in mesh, the said in ner wall of the yoke being provided with a recess to receive said cross-head when the latter is turned, a shank 011 said cross-head, said last-mentioned shank being mounted in the yoke and provided with a button, and a spring adapted to force the cross-head into said recess when turned and retain it in such position when the yoke and the jaw thereon are to be adjusted relatively to the fixed jaw, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a shank, of ahead thereon, said head forming a smooth jaw and aserrated jaw at opposite sides of the shank, a yoke mounted on the shank and having two jaws, one plain and the other serrated to cooperate respectively with the plain and serrated fiXed jaws, intermeshing teeth on the shank and in the yoke, a cross-head adapted to be disposed between the shank and the inner wall of the yoke, whereby to retain the ratchet-teeth in mesh, and means for removing said cross-head from its position between the inner wall of the yoke and the shank, whereby to permit the adjustment of the jaws on the movable yoke, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OLE WIGTIL.
