L. SEAGER.
WRENCH.
I WITNESSES UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAURANCE SEAGER, OF SITTINGBOURNE, ENGLAND.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,381, dated February 2, 1897.
Application filed January 9, 1896. Serial NoA 574,835.
To @ZZ whom, t 711.6141/ conce/'1b.-
Bo it known that I, LAUEANCE SEAGEE, a subject of the Queen of 4Great Britain, and a resident of Sittingbourne, county of Kent, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Spanners and lVrenches, (for which I have obtained English Patent No. 1,110, dated January 18, 1893,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part hereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable spanners and wrenches, and has for its object to provide an article of this character which will be inexpensive, few and sim- V ple in its parts, and operative.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the aunexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of my improveddevice, showing its application as a nut-wrench. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the device for use in gripping pipes, bars, and the like. Fig. 4c is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on a line w of Fig. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan View; and Figs. G and 7 show, respectively, a side elevation and an inverted plan ofthe loose jaw for use as a Spanner.
In carrying out my invention I provide a handle or stock a with a jaw h, which jaw is formed integrally with the handle and is set at a convenient angle. Through this jaw is formed a vertical slot h', adapted to engage with the shank portion d' of the movable jaw cl. On the rear face of the portion CZ is a toothed edge e, which said toothed portion engages with a toothed surface con the interior rear wall of the slot b', whereby the jaw CL may be maintained in any desired position.
To more securelyhold the loose jaw in place, I provide a spring f, which said spring is secured to the handle a and bears upon the upper end of the portion d of the jaw CZ. To further secure the said jaw, I provide thumbscrews g, which pass through one of the walls of the slotted portion of the jaw b and bear against the portion d of the jaw d, or the jaw d may be provided with slot z', which is adapted to carry the sliding wedge h. The said wedge may be forced between the portion d' of the movable jaw and one ,of the walls of the slot ZJ', whereby the movable jaw may be held in any desired position.
The device may further be supplied with a measuring-scale j, the said scale being placed upon the outer surface of the fixed jaw b.
Fig. 3 shows the Xed jaw set at an angle for gripping pipes, bars, and the like, said jaw being supplied with teeth k, which are adapted to bite into the bars or pipes being operated upon.
To enable the device, as shown in Fig. 3, to be used as a spanner, I provide an additional loosev jaw, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the gripping-surface of which jaw is set at an angle parallel to the toothed surface of the fixed jaw b.
I do not confine myself to the exact construction as shown in the drawings and herein described, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to make slight changes. For instance, while the drawings show the teeth formed on fixed jaw b I do not confine myself to this, as I find in practice it is sometimes preferable to have said teeth formed on loose jaw CZ.
I do not claim, broadly, an adjustable Wrench in which the movable jawshank passes through an opening in a fixed jaw, as I am aware that such construction is not new, but my invention relates to the special parts and arrangement of them for operating a wrench of this character, as I have set forth in my specification.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to s( cure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench consisting of a handle having a jaw formed thereon, and through said jaw a slot having a toothed surface, a movable jaw provided with a toothed arm working in said slot, a plate-spring for holding said jaws in engagement, and a wedge sliding in a slot in the movable jaw for securing the jaws in position when engaged, substantially as shown and described.
In testilnony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of October, 1895.
