Description

J. TRAUDT, Jr.
, WRENGH.
(No Model No. 555,716.- Ptented Mar. 3, 1896.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN TRAUDT, JR., OF MILWAUKEE, IVISCONSIN.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 555,716, dated March 3, 1896.
Application filed November 4:, 1895. $erial No. 567,830. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TRAUDT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its main object to provide a combined preferably adjustable-jaw wrench and a spoke-nipple grip, the same being especially designed as a convenient tool for the use of bicycle-riders and workmen employed in the manufacture or repair of such vehicles.
The said invention therefore consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of one well-known form of adjustablejaw wrench combined with a spoke-nipple grip, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section taken on line 2 2 of the preceding figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a shank of any suitable dimensions, provided with a head extended in one direction to form a stationary jaw B, and sleeved on the shank is another jaw O carrying a loose worm-spindle D in mesh with a rack constituting part of one edge of said shank, the assemblage of parts thus far described constituting one type of an adj ustable-jaw or monkey wrench.
The wrench-head is formed or otherwise provided at one extremity thereof with a laterally-extending jaw E, and in hinge-joint connection with said wrench-head is an arm F also provided with a laterallyextending jaw G, the latter being parallel to the jaw E aforesaid. The jaws E G are normally held apart by means of a spiral spring H seated in recesses formed in the wrench-head and the arm F hinged thereto.
The adjustable-j aw sleeve of the wrench is provided with a cam-nose I that operates in one direction against an inclined edge portion of the hinged arm]? to cause compression of the spring H and an approach of the jaw G toward the one, E, on the wrench-head. The adjustable-jaw sleeve of the wrench is also provided with a lateral recessed projection or hook J designed for engagement of a spoke having its nipple gripped between the jaws E G above specified.
While I have shown one form of adjustable-j aw wrench combined with a nipple-grip, the latter may be combined with any of the various forms of such wrenches without departure from what I seek to cover as my invention. It is also practical to combine the nipple grip with other than a sliding jaw wrench, and said nipple-grip being practically a vise it is capable of a multiplicity of uses.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench having its head provided with a lateral extension constituting a nipple-grip jaw, an arm hinged to the wrench-head and also provided with a lateral extension constituting another nipple-grip jaw parallel to the one aforesaid, together with an arm-operating nose extended from a jaw-sleeve adjustable longitudinally of the wrench-shank.
2. A wrench having its head provided with a lateral extension constituting a nipple-grip jaw, an arm hinged to the wrench-head and also provided with a lateral extension constituting another nipple-grip jaw parallel to the one aforesaid, an arm-operating nose extended from a jaw-sleeve adjustable on the wrench-shank, and a spoke-hook on the jawsleeve.
3. A wrench having its head provided with a lateral extension constituting a nipple-grip jaw, an arm hinged to the wrench-head and also provided with a lateral extension constituting another nipple-grip jaw parallel to the one aforesaid, a spring intermediate of the wrench-head and hinged arm adjacent to said jaws, and an arm-operating nose extended from a jaw-sleeve adjustable longitudinally of the wrench-shank.
-.l-. A wrench having a nipple-grip jaw, an have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in arm hinged to the wrench and provided with the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visa nipple-grip jaw opposing the one aforesaid, consin, in the presence of two witnesses. an arm-operating device adjustable on the JOHN TRAUDT, J R. 5 wrench-shank, and a spoke-hook on the nip- \Vitnesses:
ple-grip side of the wrench. N. E. OLIPHANT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I B. C. ROLOFF.
