Be it known that I, WVALTER BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of /Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, referencc being had to the accompanying drawln s.
lhis invention relates to wrenches, and has for its principal object to provide a very simple and convenient tool of the above character Which may be easily and quickly adjustd to receive bolts or nuts ol difiercnt sizes to permit of the quick removal of the nut.
A further object of my invention is to produce a wrench which is extremely strozng and durable in construction, is composed of very few parts and may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan VieW of a cool constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a sicle elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective VieW of the adjustable jaw; Fig. 6 is a similar view of.the removable stationary jaw; and Figs7 is a detail perspective view of the pivoted swinging element whercby the wrench may be positioned upon the bolt.
Referring in detail to the drawings 5 designates the shank or handle of my improved cool upon one end of which a rectangular body 6 is formed.
The body or base of my improved wrench is formed with a rectangular opening 9 whereby the longitudinal parallel walls 10 are provided, the opposed faces of said walls being formed With a longitudinal shoulder 11. A stationary jaw 12 is arranged in the inner end of the opening 9 of the body, said jaw being formed with projecting end walls 12 for engagement upon the longitudinal shoulders 11 of the sides 10 of the wrench body. This j aw is formed at one side of its cen' tral portion with a bolt receiving opening 13 which is adapted to receive the bolt 14:, providcd with the usual head, the other end of said bolt being threaded to receive a nut 15. In order to prevent the jaw 12 from turnin upon the bolt 11 when the tool is being used as a Wrench, one end of the jaw is provided with a socket 16 which receives the rednced end of a screw 17 which is adapted to be threaded through one of the parallel side walls 10 of the wrench body. The jaW 12 is formed upon its upper edge with a laterally extending Wall 18 which is centrally recessed as at 18, the surface of said recess being serrated. It Will be noted that the jaW 12 is formed with a rounded corner 12 whereby said jaW may be swung upon the bolt 14 by rcmoving or loosening the screw 17, into a position at right angles to that shown in Fig. 3.
The handle 5 at the end of the opening 9 in the wrench body is provided with a recess 5 in Which a spring 30 is positioned. One end of this spring is secured to the handle and the other end thereof to the pivotally mounted jaw 12. This spring acts to normally retain the jaW 12 in a horizontal position between the parallel side portions of the wrench body as shown in Fig. 3.
One end of the wreneh body is provided with a longitudinal opening 19, in Which the shank 20 of the adjustable wrench jaw 21 is slidably disposed. This shank is formed on one face With the rack teeth 21 for engagement by the end of a dog 22 Which is pivotally mounted between the ears 23, formed upon the body of the Wrench. A spring 24 bears upon the other end of the dog, said spring being in the form of the ordinary leaf spring bent upon itself and being seated in the recess 25 Which is provided for the reception of the same in the body of the Wrench. The adjustable wrench jaw 21 is formed in its face With a serrated recess 21 Which is the counterpart of the recess 18 of the stationary jaW 12. The manner in which the jaw 21 is adjusted Will be apparent from reference to Fig. 3. The dog 22 is disengaged with the rack teeth 21 and the shank 20 moved longitudinally through the opening 19 in the end of the wrench body. The jaw 21 may thus be spaced relatively to the jaw 12 so as t0 engage the serrated recessed portions thereof upon the periphery of a bolt to be held between the same. The jaw 21 is also provided with a vertically disposed plate 21" WhiCh is arranged above the jaw, the ends of said plate extending over and moving upon the longitudinal shoulders 11 on the sides of the body of the vvrench. A finger-pieoe 21 is formed upon the upper edge of' the plate 21 which is adapted to be grasped by the operator to adjust the jaw 21 in the opening of the Wrench body. It Will furt-her be noted from reference to Fig. 3 that the serrated portions of the jaws 21 and 12 are not disposed in the same longitudinal plane so that they Will grip at diflerent points upon the bolt.
In order to permit of the easy and quick insertion of positioning of the bolt to be engaged with the wrench jaws, I provide the bar 26 which is reduced at its ends as shown at 26 to be received in the bifurcated ends of a outaway portion of one of the longitudinal walls 10 of the wrench loody. This bar is also formed with a longitudinal shouL der 11 which is disposed in line with the shoulder f0rmed on the remaining portions of the side Wall of the wrench, the continuity of said shoulder being thus maintained throughout the length of the rectangular opening 9. A pivot bolt 27 extends through one of the reduced end pbrtions of said bar and through the side wall of the WIGDClL body, and the other end of said bar is provided with a rectangular opening 28 to receive a tapering pin 29, said pin also extending through similar openings provided in the bifurcated portion of the body wall 10. Thus the pivoted bar 26 is securely locked in position while at the same time the pin 29 may be readily removed and the bar 26 swung outwardly whereupon the jaws 12 and 21 of the wrench may be properly arranged upon opposite sides of the bolt to be held thereby.
In the use of the tool as a bolt puller, the bolt is positi0ned in the opening 9 of the Wrench body between the jaws 12 and 21. Thevvrench is moved longitudinafly upon the bolt in one direction as it is pulled from the timber or other obj oct, the jaw 12 swing ing upon its pivot into substantiafly the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig 2 so as to disengage the toothed friction producing portion 18 thereof from the bolt. In the attempted reverse rhovement of the wrench upon the bolt shank the spring 30 returns the jaw to its normal position so that the jaws 12 and 21 grip firmly upon the bolt shank whereby said bolt may be withdrawn.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and operation of my improved 7 tool Will be readily understood.
The device is comparatively simple in 0nstxuction and may be used for a number of veryuseful purposes. The parts are also easily and quickly adjusted and owing to the small number of elements employed, it.,
Will be obvious that the device is highly durable in practioal use and may be constructed at a very lOW cost.
While I have shown and describd the preferred construction and arrangement of the various parts, it Will be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the essential feature or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is: V
1. In a tool of'the character described, the combination of a body having a rectangular opening therein, the opposed walls of said opening being provided with longitudinal shoulders, a jaw pivotally mounted in the opening of said loody seated upon said sh0ulders, means for looking the jaw in said opening against pivotal movement, a longitudinal movable jaw having extensions seated upon the shoulders of the body, means for securing said jaw in its adjusted position with relation to the stationary jaW, an opening in one of the side walls ofthe body, and a locking bar normally closing said opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a tool of the character described, the
combination of a body having a rectangular opening, a j avv pivotally mounted in said opening, a stop shoulder formed on one of the end walls of' the opening to limit the pivotal movement of the jaW in one direction, a set screw adapted to engage one of the end Walls of the jaw and secure the same in a horizontal position in said opening, a jaw having a shank longitudinally movable through one end of the body, said jaw being disposed in the opening of the body for movement relative to the stationary javv, means for securing the movable javv in its adjusced position, anopening in one of the side walls of said body, a looking bar pivotally mounted in said loody to extend into the opening, and a pin insertible through alined openings in the body and in said bar to close the opening in said side wall, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In atool of the charaoter describad, the combination of a body having a rectangular opening therein to provide parallel side walls, one of said side walls having a eutaway portion, the opposed faces of said walls being provided With shoulders, a jaW pivotally mounted in one end of the opening, means for rigidly securing the jaw in a horizontal position, said javv being seated oted jaw, a bar having reduoed ends, said bar being movable in and out of the opnng in the side wall of the body, a pivot bolt pivotally securing sad bar at one end "(0 the body, said bar being provided with a longitudinal shonlder to be disposed in continuty Wth the shoulder on the side wall, and means for locking Sad bar in the opening of the side wall, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4.
