Description
No. 809,615. PATENTED JAN, 9, 1906. L. J. HOPKINS PAD HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 1.1905.
UNITED s rann'r orrron.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Application filed May 1,1905. Serial No. 258,237.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Torrington, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pad-Holders; and Ido hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which saiddrawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure l, a perspective view of a pad-holder constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the clampingplate detached, showing the handle broken away; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the bedplate with the clamp removed; Fig. 5, a broken sectional view illustrating a modification in the manner of securing the clampingplate to the bedplate; Fig. 6, a plan view of the pad-holder adapted for greasing griddles, &c., and provided with a long loop like handle.
This invention relates to an improvement in pad-holders; and while particularly adapted as a device for greasing griddles and bakingtins may be made in various sizes and suitable for cleaning windows, blacking stoves,
and other purposes for which a handled pad may be desirable, the object of the invention being a simple and convenient means for clamping a cloth or pad to a holder; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a substantially flat bedplate 2, having ends 3 4 turned upward at substantially right angles thereto and formed with serrations or teeth 5. In the center of the plate is a vertical screwthreaded post 6, and adapted to set over this post is a bowed spring clamping-plate 7, having serrations or teeth 8 at its ends, the length of the clamping-plate being shorter than the length of the bed-plate 2, so that the ends of the clamp will pass between the upturned ends of the plate 2. The clamping-plate has a clearance-hole 9 for the threaded post 6, which receives a nut 10, by which the clampingplate 7 is forced into contact with the plate 2. A handle is attached to the clamping-plate 7 and may be of any approved style, that shown in Fig. l of the drawings being a D-handle 14, having its ends secured to the clampingplate near the ends thereof. A pad 11, of cloth or other suitable material, is passed over the under face of the plate 2 and its ends turned over the teeth 5 and beneath the teeth 8, it being understood that the clamping-plate is raised to permit the introduction of the ends of the pad, after which the clamp is forced down so as to bite upon the ends of the pad and hold it in close engagement with the plate 2.
As a device for greasing griddles, bakingtins, 620., along handle may be desired. Thus, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, a handle 20 is formed from a single piece of wire cloubled midway of its length and having its ends secured to the clamping-plate on opposite sides of the clearance-hole 9 and beneath the nut 10. Instead of having a screw-threaded post 6 and a nut 10 thereon a post 21 may be arranged in the center of the bed-plate and have a head 22, which passes through a clearance-opening in the clmnping-plate and the clampingplate provided with a pivotal lever 23, which has an inclined surface adapted to pass under the head of the post and so as to hold the clamping-plate in place, as shown in Fig. 5.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for the purpose specified consisting of a bed-plate having its two ends turned upward and serrated, a bowed spring clamping-plate having downwardly-turned serrated ends adapted to pass between the ends of the bedplate, a pad extending across the under face of the bed-plate and over the serrated ends thereof and beneath the edges of the clamping-plate, and means for connecting the clamping-plate with the bedplate whereby the pad is held in position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS J. HOPKINS.
