ADJUSTABLE HANDLE-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Application filed August 24, 1911. Serial No. 645,777.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. "Wnrrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Handle-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable holders for brushes, or the like, and an object thereof is to provide a holder including an auxiliary handle which may be used as an extension for the handle of the brush, and which may be conveniently adjusted at different angles with respect to the brush in the use of the latter.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder having peculiar adjusting means, and which is neat in appearance and simple and efiicient in construction.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention showing a brush in place. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a modification. Fig. A is a plan view of the retaining washer.
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the handle of a brush which is attached to the holder 2, the latter being carried by the auxiliary handle 3.
Describing the construction of the holder specifically, the same consists of a disk 4 having a central opening 5 and notches 5 in the edge thereof. The disk has provided on one side thereof spaced lugs 6 which have a concave roughened top which forms a bearing for the brush handle. The auxiliary handle is tapered at one end thereof and formed with a slot 8, through which slot and the opening 5 of the disk 4: is adapted to pass a clamping bolt 9, the latter being bent to form a handle engaging hook 10 at one end thereof, and the opposite end being threaded to receive thereon a clamping nut 11. A positioning screw 12 is received in a threaded opening in the handle and is adapted to be engaged by one of the notches 5 to keep the disk 4 in the desired adjusted position. It will be noted that the lugs 6 are located to one side of the disk at sufiiciently to admit of the brush handle being received on said lugs at one side of the clamping bolt, as shown clearly in the drawings.
In operation, the handle of a brush, or other implement is located on the lugs 6 provided therefor, under the hook portion 10 of the clamping bolt and the disk turned to give the desired angle to the brush. The screw 12 is then engaged with one of the notches 5 and the clamping nut 11 tightened to maintain the parts in position. The adjustment of the holder is facilitated by the slot 8 inasmuch as the disk 4 can be moved outwardly toward the end of the auxiliary handle to disengage the screw 12 from the notch in which it is received. The disk may then be rotated to give the proper angle to the handle and then moved to again engage the screw 12 in one of the notches 5.
An advantage of the present invention resides in the fact that it is not necessary to operate the clamping nut for readjustment of the brush due to the tapered bearing for said nut, a slight pull on the handle being sutlicient to disengage the screw 12 from the recess 5. After adjustment, the handle may again be brought into place and will be firmly caught in position owing to the wedging action against the nut.
In the modified form shown. in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the washer 13 is formed with a lateral extension 14 which is bent to provide an indentation 15 adapted to co'ciperate with a projection 16 on the handle. By this arrangement it will be seen that the holder will be more firmly caught in adjusted position and when readjustment is desired, it is only necessary to exert a slight pull on the auxiliary handle, thereby disengaging the indentation 15 from the projection 16 simultaneously with the screw 12 becoming disengaged from the notched portion of the disk at. After desired adjustment of the brush, the parts may then be brought back to their locked position and retained therein by the above described cooperation of the elements 15 and 16. It will be seen that, in this manner, a very rigid connection of the parts may be obtained.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An adjustable brush holder comprising a disk having an opening therein and notches in the edge thereof, lugs carried on a side of the disk, a handle having an elongated opening therethrough, a positioning screw carried by the handle and adapted to cooperate with said notches, and a clamping bolt passing through said opening in the disk and the opening in said handle, the clamping bolt having a handle engaging portion and adapted to thereby clamp a handle in position, the latter being caught between the aforesaid lugs and the handle engaging portion of the clamping bolt.
2. An adjustable brush holder comprising an auxiliary handle having a slot there-- through and being tapered adjacent to said slot, a disk having a notch in one side thereof and an opening therethrough, a handle engaging lug carried by the disk, a clamping bolt passing through the opening in the disk and through the slot in said h andle and further having a clamping nut adapted to cooperate with the tapered portion on said handle, thereby frictionally retaining the holder in adjusted position, and means carried by said auxiliary handle co acting with the notch in said disk, thereby preventing rotation of the disk.
3. An adjustable brush holder comprising an auxiliary handle having a slot therethrough and a projection adjacent to said slot, a disk having an opening therethrough, a handle engaging lug carried by the disk, a clamping bolt having a handle engaging portion and passing through the opening in the disk and through the slot in the auxiliary handle, a washer carried by the clamping bolt and having a lateral extension formed with an indentation, said indentation being adapted to cooperate wit-h the projection on said handle to prevent longitudinal movement of the handle, and means for preventing rotative movement of said disk.
4. An adjustable brush holder comprising an auxiliary handle having a slot therethrough and a projection slot, a disk having an opening therethrough, a handle engaging lug carried by the disk, a clamping bolt having a handle engaging t portion and passing through the opening in i the disk and through the slot in the auxt iliary handle, and a washer carried by the clamping bolt and having a lateral extension formed with an indentation, said indentation being adapted to cooperate with the projection on said handle to prevent j longitudinal movement of the handle.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
