\MTPIEEEEE 6; W M CL QUw-fi--ok NITED STATES PATENT orrion OIL-APPLYING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed May 23. 1905. Serial No. 261,881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and Improved Oil-Applying Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for applying oil, more particularly for thepurpose of oiling floors; and the invention consists of a new and improved clamping-head adapted to receive an ordinary handle and designed to hold securely and rigidly the portion which receives the oil and directly applies it to the floor, such portion consisting, preferably, of one or more pieces or layers of thick felt.
The nature of the invention is fully described below and illustrated in the accom' panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my imroved device, a portion of the handle being illustrated. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross vertical section taken on line ac ac, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
(t represents a metallic back plate having its upper edge bent inward horizontally at I) in .order to produce additional stiffness. The lower edge of the plate is provided with an inwardly-bent flange c. Rigidly secured to the rear side of this plate is a socket d, adapted to receive an ordinary handle 6, and a supporting-arm f has its outer end rigidly secured to the upper side of the socket, its in ner end being hook-shaped at g and catching under the flange I).
Afront plate 7 is provided at its upper edge with. an inward horizontal flange 7c and at its lower edge with the inwardly-bent flange Z, provided with a toothed edge, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The two plates a l) c and h lc Z are exactly alike and constitute clamps or jaws for folding and engaging the opposite sides of a series of layers of felt a, said felt being adapted to receive the oil and apply it to a floor very much as a mop applies water.
The two plates a and 7b are connected, preferably at points a little above the center, by a horizontal plate p, whose opposite edges are bent down into parallel flanges 8, said flanges being connected by bolts or rivets t with the two clamping-plates. The inner horizontal plate p therefore serves not only as a holder which connects the two clamping-plates, but also as a head for the felt and a guide whereby said felt may be pushed up against it between the clamps and be retained in a hori' zontal position. The upper portions of the plates (1 and h are held at their outer ends normally apart by a air of stiff springs 11., which surround the s ianks of bolts 4), extending inward from the clamping-plates. As will readily be seen, the felt is held firmly and securely in position by the teeth on the inwardly-projecting flanges at the lower ends of the clamping-jaws a h, the springs a holding the upper edges of the clamping-plates apart, and hence their lower edges into engagement with the felt, the rivets 25 serving practically as pivots. To release the felt,
the upper edges of the plates are pressed toward each other against the power of the springs.
The ease and quickness with which the felt can be applied and removed from its position between the clamps is an important advantage possessed by my invention. Among the other advantages are simplicity of construction, durability, and economy in manufacture.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hereindescribed oil-applying device, comprising a pair of substantially parallel clamping-plates adapted to extend on opposite sides of the material for directly applying the oil, a horizontal plate provided at its opposite edges with. downwardly-extending parallel flanges, said horizontal plate being located between the said clamping-plates and extending for substantially the entire length thereof, and secured by means of said flanges to said clamping-plates and adapted to operate as a head and as a guide for the oil-applying material, and springs near the upper edges of the clamping-plates extending from one of said clamping-plates to the other whereby said upper edges are held nor mally apart, for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described oil-applying de vice, comprising the parallel clamping-plates a; h the former provided with the forwardlyextending flange b at its upper edge, the separating plate or head 1) provided with downwardly-extending flanges s at its opposite edges whereby said plate is secured to and springs holdbetween the clamping-plates,
ing the upper edges of the clamping-plates In testimony whereof I have signed my normally apart, the socket d rigidly secured name to this specification in the presence of to the rear surface of the plate a, and the arm two subscribing witnesses.
f secured at its upper end to said socket and CHARLES S. YOUNG. 5 with its lower end 9 doubled rearward under Witnesses:
the inner edge of said flange b, for the purpose HENRY W. WILLIAMS,
set forth. I A. K. H001).
