NTE l STATES PATENT UFFICE.
WALTER JOSEPH LLOYD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM VAN DE SANDT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHOE-CLEANER.
Application filed September 12, 1911, Serial No. 648,870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VAT/PER J. LLOYD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shoe-Cleaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates to shoe cleaners and it has for its object to provide one having brush members with guides for traveling in curved slots, so that the brush members will be moved as desired relatively to a shoe, when the brush members are pressed by a shoe away from each other and against the tension of resilient means.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed,
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that an open frame 5 is provided, a longitudinal member 6 with curved slots 7, extending from one end of the frame 5 to the other. A wire mat member 9 is secured to the open frame 5, and also to the longitudinal frame member 6 having the slots 7. Lugs 10 extend inwardly from the side 8 of the open frame 5, these lugs 10 being spaced apart, and having pivoted to them arms 11, the arms having on their free terminals upwardly extending members 1.2, which extend through the slots 7, and are integral with the brackets 13, above the plates. These brackets 13 have openings in which the brush members l'ii: are disposed, the brush members 1 1 being held in place by bolts 15, which are engaged by wing nuts 16. It will be understood that the brush members 14: will be held snugly in place by the bolts 15. I prefer to provide curved or Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jul y 8, 1913.
Renewed December 7, 1912. Serial No. 735,543.
angular brush members 141 having bristles 17. Springs 18 are provided for pressing the free terminals of the arms 11 and the brush members 1 1 toward each other.
It will be understood that when a shoe 19 is introduced between the bristles 17 of the brush members 141 the brush members with their bristles will be moved away from each other and that when so moved the brush members will be caused to have a slight rocking motion relatively to the open frame 5, which will assist in removing dust and dirt from the sides of the shoe. An arm 20 extends upwardly from the open frame 5, and is provided with a handle 21 which may be grasped by the person using the device.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a shoe cleaner a base, a mat thereon, provided with two slots, two brushes disposed above the mat and having guides for traveling in the slots, and arms pivoted to the base on vertical axes and connected with the guides for directing their movement.
2. In a shoe cleaner a supporting base frame, a mat thereon, having slots, two arms disposed below the mat and pivoted relatively thereto, resilient means for pressing the arms yieldingly toward each other, brackets disposed above the mat and having members for traveling in the slots, and secured to the arms, and a brush mounted on each of the brackets.
3. In a shoe cleaner a mat having two slots, two brushes disposed above the mat and having guides for traveling in the slots, and means disposed below the mat for pressing the brushes toward each other and for moving the brushes at angles to each other when the guides are moved in the slots.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER JOSEPH LLOYD.
