PEN CLEANER AND HOLDER.

Be it known that I, JOHN J. HOEY, a citizen of the yUnited States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pen Cleaner and Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a pen cleaner of that type in which bristles are employed for cleaning` the pen by the latter being worked up and down in the` bristles several times.

The invention has for its general objects to provide an extremely simple, inexpensive and durable pen cleaner of the character referred to and which possesses the additional advantages that it may be used as a pen holder or rack as well as a paper weight.

A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a pen cleaner in the form of oppositely-dsposed brushes having their bristles meshing in such wise that a pen can be easily and conveniently inserted in the brushes to remove the ink from the pen, or to hold the pen when the same is not to be used.

A further object is to provide novel and effective supporting means for the brushes and capable of adjustment so as to vary the degree of meshng of the bristles, whereby the grip of the bristles on the pen to be cleaned can be regulated to suit the desire of the user.

`With these objects in view, and others as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.

,In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and wherein similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined pen cleaner and holder; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and F ig. 3 is a side view.

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the base ofthe device which may be of any desired shape and size. In the present instance the base 1 is circular and made of metal or other suitable material so as to serve as a paper weight as well vas a support for the pen cleaner and holder. pen cleaning brush 6. The brush 6 in one j aw element or holder 2 is disposed opposite the other brush and the bristles 7 of the brushes meet or intermesh according to the desire of the user. The j aw members 2 can be adjusted toward or from each other to vary the, degree of intermeshing of the bristles and this adjustment is effected b any suitable means such as right and lefthand screws 8 threaded in lugs 9 at the ends of the brush-holding members 2. By turning these screws the jaw members 2 which may be made of spring metal can be moved toward or from each other for the purpose mentioned. The brushes 6 have Wooden or other backs 10 and are removable from their respective holding members 2, so that the bristles can be cleaned Whenever desired, but to remove the brushes one of the screws 8 must be taken out so that the brushes can be slipped longitudinally or horizontally out of the members 2. The fianges 5 slepe downwardly so as to guide the pen into the bristles if the pen should happen to strike either flange in the act of inserting the pen into the cleaner. The bristles have a grip of considerable pressure on a pen when it is inserted in the cleaner and consequently the device can be used as a holder for a pen and its handle, the latter being held upright in the pen cleaner as shown in Fig. 1.

The brushes may have some of the bristles made of steel or other metal so as to be effective in removing ink that has caked on a pen. Thus in Fig. 2 it will be observed that the brushes are provided at their right ends with Steel or other metallic bristles 11, while the remaining bristles are of hair of suitable stiffness.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes jaw member 2 has an may be made When desired as are Within the scope of the appendedflclaims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A pen cleaner and holder comprising oppositely disposed brushes, supports for holding the brushes, and connecting devices arranged at the ends of the supports and extending across the ends of the brushes and adjustably connecting them together, whereby the brushes can be moved toward and from each other.

2. A pen cleaner and holder comprsing a pair of brushes each having a section of relatively soft bristles,.the brnshes being so arranged that corresponding sectons are oppositely disposedV to each other, supports for the brushes and differentally movable five cents each,

at opposite ends and separately adjustable means connected With the ends of the support for moving the corresponding ends of the brushes toward each other to different degrees.

3. A pen cleaner and holder comprising a supporting structure including spaced jaW elements, means connected With both elements for simultaneously moving the elements toW-ard or from each other, brushes mounted in the jaw elements.
