To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER MAENDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in brushes designed for painting and calcimining, its object being to provide a construction and arrangement of bristles which will enable the bristles to point inwardly at their free ends forming a reservoir for the liquid and allowing better work being done and in connection therewith means supporting the brush in a position when not in use to hold the liquid within the reservoir formed by the bristles.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my paint brush; Fig. 2 is an end View of the same; Fig. 3 is a section on line y-y of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on line 00-00 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one end of the brush.

Referring to the drawing A represents the back of the brush preferably formed of sheet metal and provided with a handle 2. In order to hold the bristles within the backing A, I provide a series of strips 6 interspaced to support the intermediate bristles 7 and having inwardly inclining outer sides 8 to permit the bristles to point inwardly toward the free ends as shown in Fig. 3. The bristles and strips 7 are held together by means of a metal band 9. The interspacing strips with the intermediate row of bristles are entirely surrounded by a row of bristles l0 inside the metal band 9. The row of bris- Specification of Letters Patent.

tles 10 thus constitutes a reservoir to hold the liquid, this result being further attained by the free ends of the bristles being brought toward a wedge point, as shown in Fig. 3.

In order to prevent the escape of the liquid from the reservoir formed by the bristles 10, I secure right angle rests 11 upon the opposite ends of the brush back by means of which the brush can be held in inclined position.

In use the liquid carried by the brush will cause the bristles to stand in closer relative position toward their free ends, as indicated in Fig. 2, allowing more satisfactory use of the brush and forming more efficient reservoirs between the rows of bristles to hold the liquid.

I claim as my invention:

1. A brush of the class described comprising a series of strips having inwardly inclined outer sides, a backing therefor, bristles held between said strips, a row of bristles surrounding said strips, a binder there for and a handle.

2. In a brush of the class described comprising a backing, a plurality of rows of bristles supported by said backing, means for holding said rows of bristles with their outer ends pointing inwardly toward each other, a row of surrounding bristles, and means for holding said row of bristles with its outer ends pointing inwardly toward the outer ends of the inner rows of bristles.
