Zfl Z Witnesses I Inventor rm/11m by I I Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. CAMPBELL, OF PENDLET'ON, OREGON.
LOSS-PREVENTING DEVICE.
Application filed August 30, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM N. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pendleton, in the county of Umatilla and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Loss-Preventing Device, of whichthe following is a specification.
The structure forming the subject matter of this application is a loss-preventing device adapted to retain pencils, mechanics rules, paint brushes, spectacle cases and the like in the pocket of the garment of a wearer, or upon the garment otherwise.
The invention aims to provide in astructure of this type, a pair of side or auxiliary clips, and an intermediate or main clip, the main clip coacting in a novel manner with the auxiliary clips to aid in holding articles in the auxiliary clips.
Another object of the invention is to improve the means for connecting the various clips with the body portion of the structure, so that the body portion may be reinforced and strengthened by the clips.
It is within the Province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the .precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 shows the invention in front elevation; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section.
The loss preventing device forming the subject matter of this application includes a plate-like body 1 preferably fashioned from metal, and equipped at its upper edge with a rearwardly extended, inclined, deflecting lip 2. The longitudinal edges of the body 1 are forwardly extended to form end walls 3 equipped at their upper ends with tubular sockets 4.
Below the sockets 4 are located. arched, resilient strips 5 embodying horizontal loopshaped heads 6. The arms of the auxiliary clips 5 are extended through notches 7 formed in the lower edges of the end walls Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Feb, 15 9 1916 Serial No. 48,088.
3 and are upwardly extended as indicated at 8 along the outer faces of the end walls, the extended portions 8 of the arms of the clips being secured to the end walls toact as reinforcements therefor.
The invention comprises an arched main clip 9, the crown of which lies between the sockets & and is provided with a manipulating button 10. As indicated at l1,the arms of the main clip 9 are bowed forwardly, away from the body 1. Thus, the arms of the main clip 9 are made to enter between the arms of the clips 5, to cooperate therewith, in a manner which will be pointed out hereinafter. The arms'of the main clip 9 are carried through notches 12 in the lower edge of the body I and are extended up.- wardly as shown at.15, along the rear face of the body 1, the upper extremities of the portions 15 of the clip being secured to the body by means of solder 16 or otherwise. The portions 15 of the clips are bent upon themselves as shown at 14 to form eyes re-' ceiving a rod 17 which is resilient, the intermediate portion of the rod 16 being secured by means of solder 18 or in any other suitable manner to the rear face of the body 1. The sockets 4 may carry bendable prongs 19, that the device forming the subject matter of this application may be held to the garment either in the pocket thereof or upon the interior of the garment.
In practical operation, pencils or other like objects may be thrust into the sockets 1 and will be held therein, yieldably, by the heads 6 of the clips 5. Noting that, as shown at 11, the arms of the main clip are outwardly arched, its arms bear against the pencil or other article carried by the sockets l and the clips 5-6 and serve to aid in retaining the article in place. A spectacle case, a mechanics rule, a brush or the like may be inserted between the main clip 9 and the body 1, the lip 2 serving to deflect the article to place. \Vhen the pencil or other article is engaged by the clip 9, the resilient ends of the rod 17 are put under tension and coact with the clip 9 to impart resiliency to the main clip and to render the main clip more efficient in retaining the article engaged thereby. v
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a body; apair of auxiliary arched clips projecting upwardly .along the body adjacent the lateral. edges of the body and comprising side arms; and an arched main clip, the crown of which lies between the auxiliry clips, the main clip comprising arms assembled with the body and outwardly arched with respect to the body to lie between the arms of the auxiliary clips and to cooperate with the auxiliary clips in retaining an. article in the auxiliary clips.
2. In a device of the class described, a body comprising forwardly extended. end. walls, the upper ends of which are equipped with tubular sockets; and arched clips located below the sockets, the clips comprising arms which are upwardly extended along the outer faces of the end Walls and are secured thereto to form reinforcements for the end walls.
3. In a device of the class described, a body; an arched clip lying along one face of the body and comprising arms extended along the opposite face of the body and secured thereto, the arms being bent upon themselves to form eyes; a rod engaged with the eyes; and means for securing the rod to the body.
4. In a device of the class described, a body provided at its upper edge with a rearwardly extended deflecting lip, an arched main clip assembled with the body and. lo cated below the lip; the body being provided at its upper edge with tubular sockets located upon opposite sides of the lip; and auxiliary clips assembled with the body and located below the sockets.
5. In a device of the class described, a body; an arched clip coacting with one face of the body, the arms of the clip being ex tended across one edge of the body and be ing prolonged to form extensions secured to the other face of the body; a resilient rod, the ends of which bear upon the extensions; and means for securingthe intermediate portion of the rod to said other face of the body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ailixed. my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
